I...never....win!

... So close, yet so far.

I am not sure how close/far I am from Porcelain. Part of it is a matter of how much space was between whistle and post.

Yeah.

I've got to hone the technique. Clicked the whistle, then let it sit in an open tab on the text-box for a bit.

What a rookie mistake.

Yay!

I thought that a rule was made which stated that one must post for the whistle to count?

Posted by MattP (Member # 10495) on :

I wasn't aware of such a rule. But if I whistle any more I'll post too.

Posted by porcelain girl (Member # 1080) on :

i don't think you should have to post, as someone mentioned it only serves to bump particularly unsavory spam.

Posted by JonHecht (Member # 9712) on :

Oh, I am not sure a rule actually exists. I just remember a couple dozen spams ago someone mentioning that it should, iirc. I kind of agree with Porcelain, but it is just disappointing when you think you are first and someone already did it way before you.

I have a roommate who's a MattP too.

Yes, and even though I think the whistle race is fun (and most likely healthy for the community), I do think I'd like it better if there weren't spam.

On Wikipedia, this kind of thing is called "troll-feeding." Making a game out of abuse encourages vandals and spammers to keep it up.

Does it really? Are there really spammers out there who are saying "Hey! Those Hatrack guys are getting a kick out of this, let's do it more!"

I'm pretty sure this spam is generated by a bot that has no clue how we respond to it.

Agreed on all counts.

Yup. Moreover, since Pop edits out the content of the spamming thread, it's not like the spammers get any extra attention (not after the first few minutes, anyway).

One of the reasons to post that you whistled it is so that Pop doesn't get half a dozen whistles for each spam thread.
