Seriously though, is there some technical hurdle that prevents the implementation of captchas as part of the user registration process? It isn't like this is a problem that's likely to get better on its own.

Agreed. It may not get rid of them completely, but it would significantly cut down on this silliness.

Not that I am against silliness in general, I just don't agree with robot silliness.
