I've certainly seen some evidence for this assertion.
As a sidenote, my screen name was once described (by Tom IIRC) as Pharaoh-ic. Since Greek and Roman deity likely devolve from earlier Egyptian and Sumerian archetypes, and since the Pharoah was considered son of Ra, the Chief Egyptian God, I think that vaguely Pharaoh-ic sounding screen names trump all this Greek/Roman nonsense.

I believe the answer to this question reflects the overwhelming influence by Greek and Roman cultures in the civilized, or not so civilized, modern world. These cultures had a huge impact on philosophy, government, literature, and drama.
The impact was just so massive that it continues to affect the people of today as is exhibited by a tendency by some members to select usernames based off of figures from Greek or Roman mythology. Or basing their usernames off of things that subsequently have based their titles off of figures from Greek or Roman mythology.
That's taking this from a completely literal stand-point, of course. So, I may have missed the point entirely.

I wouldn't go so far as to use the word civilized in assocation with the "*Western* world." That's why I stated civilized or not civilized. It was supposed to be ambiguous as to region. Because I think that Greek and Roman society has had an impact in more regions that just the Western Hemisphere. Surely, this could be easily debated.
As I've not been afforded the opportunity to travel outside of country often, I have a somewhat limited view of other cultures. More as an outsider than someone with true understanding. I can be sure though that, if one were to look, that there has been some impact in one small way or another on most cultures by the cultures of ancient Greece and, therefore, Rome.

i.e. I'm obviously not saying that Eastern (or other cultures) are not civilized, but that Roman and Greek influences are far from "overwhelming" outside of Western society.
In other words, Greek or Roman influences on Eastern cultures like China are on the order of ancient Chinese influences on American culture (maybe even less so actually ... eh, debatable).
