Yours does have one big weakness, though.

I personally believe they're more historical than mythological, but think what you will. [Wink]

("Of course there was a Trojan War - why else would anyone sing about it?")

Your question seems to be based on entirely false premises.

I thought screen names of random products were the best...
I think Twinky would agree with me.

If I add a Roman numeral to my name, will that increase my mythology-cred?

That it was.

There is no why. It is a self-evident truth.

Pfft. Some of us don't have to make up a new name to have one that fits into Greek myth.

I'm reminded of a little poem we used to put on our Latin book covers:

Latin's a dead language,
It died across the sea.
It killed off all the Romans,
And now it's killing me!

Completely off-topic, but there you go.

And for the record, condiment-related screennames are regally superior. [Razz]

Posted by anti_maven (Member # 9789) on :

I much prefer names that describe the user's complete lack of anything resembling coherent thought.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

But enough about ketchupqueen!

-o-

While I do appreciate being called the greatest, just being recognized as amazeing is enough for me.

Puh-leeze. Real names are by FAR the best.

I've certainly seen some evidence for this assertion.

As a sidenote, my screen name was once described (by Tom IIRC) as Pharaoh-ic. Since Greek and Roman deity likely devolve from earlier Egyptian and Sumerian archetypes, and since the Pharoah was considered son of Ra, the Chief Egyptian God, I think that vaguely Pharaoh-ic sounding screen names trump all this Greek/Roman nonsense.

I do appear in the most famous of Asop's fables -- does that make me a character from greek mythology?

I should change my name to "Nighthawkius".

No promises, but you might have better luck with Tripio.

And yeah, kat's right--twinky's name comes from Moe's nickname for Calvin.

Sorry. Greek and Roman mythology ONLY.

But I would make an exception for Bob_Scopatz_IX.

The exception proves the rule, you see.

Please. The best names are entirely new words, never before seen on the Internet.

The first time I used Dagonee, it returned nothing on searches of Google, Alta Vista, or Yahoo.

I think it's a rhetorical question.

I'm the greatest. Because I'm named after a super hero. That's gotta be cool, right?

I'm mighty. Mightier than Greek or Roman heroes. Because I am the Mighty Robot Lords. All five of them.

I choose my name because the Pegasus is used in the emblem of my favorite model of car. Prize of priceless value will be given to the first correct guess of what model car it is.

I believe the answer to this question reflects the overwhelming influence by Greek and Roman cultures in the civilized, or not so civilized, modern world. These cultures had a huge impact on philosophy, government, literature, and drama.

The impact was just so massive that it continues to affect the people of today as is exhibited by a tendency by some members to select usernames based off of figures from Greek or Roman mythology. Or basing their usernames off of things that subsequently have based their titles off of figures from Greek or Roman mythology.

That's taking this from a completely literal stand-point, of course. So, I may have missed the point entirely.

I totally forgot 'bout that. I don't usually publicize my regular address, so that one is basically a spam-catcher.

I wouldn't go so far as to use the word civilized in assocation with the "*Western* world." That's why I stated civilized or not civilized. It was supposed to be ambiguous as to region. Because I think that Greek and Roman society has had an impact in more regions that just the Western Hemisphere. Surely, this could be easily debated.

As I've not been afforded the opportunity to travel outside of country often, I have a somewhat limited view of other cultures. More as an outsider than someone with true understanding. I can be sure though that, if one were to look, that there has been some impact in one small way or another on most cultures by the cultures of ancient Greece and, therefore, Rome.

I think you misunderstand me. I'm correcting your sentence like so:

i.e. I'm obviously not saying that Eastern (or other cultures) are not civilized, but that Roman and Greek influences are far from "overwhelming" outside of Western society.

In other words, Greek or Roman influences on Eastern cultures like China are on the order of ancient Chinese influences on American culture (maybe even less so actually ... eh, debatable).

Nah, names that establish a sense of intellectual superiority and great maturity are the best.
