So... what would a Hatrack t-shirt look like? Would it include Hatrack memes like "It doesn't do anything -- that's the beauty of it!" Would it have "So*" on the front or "dude cool peek-a-boo" with a Mountain Dew logo under it?

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

I like the first idea. Not so much the other two.

Posted by Boon (Member # 4646) on :

It would say:

"This shirt is a mayfly."

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

I have a Hatrack shirt. It says Endercon on it.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

I would like a shirt with a reproduction of the image in the banner. Back when I joined, it was a bigger image, which is now cut off by the oval. It's Taleswapper and Alvin, IIRC. I remember it came up elsewhere, and Hatrack can't sell prints or anything, because, I think, they don't have the rights. But I still think a shirt with that image would be muy cool.

Posted by The Genuine (Member # 11446) on :

I was surprised that this forum's store didn't offer them. Perhaps OSC can set something up through Cafepress if he doesn't want to go through the trouble himself?

Posted by The Genuine (Member # 11446) on :

Do you suppose he owns the copyright to the cover art?

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

It's not the cover art. (But I would guess the answer to that question is also no.)

A site as popular as Hatrack shouldn't be using a site as shoddy as CafePress, imho.

Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :

I don't think CafePress is shoddy, but I agree that it wouldn't be the best choice for that type of thing.

I rather like designing t-shirts though. If anyone has an idea they'd like me to make, I'll try my hand. If there's a specific image you'd like me to use, shoot me an email.

I'm going to try to make a "It doesn't DO anything..." shirt to start.

My favorite has always been:

"Stilson had it coming."

Get permission before you use the name "Hatrack River." As I recall, it was preferred that you not.

I bought my wife a CafePress shirt once. Within one washing, it was peeling. Within four months or so, it was unwearable. Shoddy, I say!

Using the quote without mentioning Hatrack would be okay, though, right? I mean, if we're going for super-secret inside jokes, would we really need to say whence they come? [Wink]

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

*nod*

I don't believe "It doesn't DO anything . . ." is intellectual property of the Cards, anyway.

(Although it could be argued . . . if you can demonstrate that the meme began here, which some of us suspected it did. But I'm sure inside jokes would be just fine.)

Not that I'm anybody to be making pronouncements. I'm only doing so until someone else comes along.

Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :

I wasn't planning on using anything overtly Hatrack related. [Smile]

As I recall, we aren't the only forum plagued by the "it doesn't DO anything" meme.

Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :

I wasn't here for the "Stilson had it coming" thing. Is there anything more that's important to the joke?

If it's too difficult to explain, I'll just do my own take on it. [Razz]

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

No, we aren't the only forum, but I think we were the infection point for the rest of the internet. Back when the thread was first made, a google search turned up virtually nothing. Now the meme is everywhere, and at least one write-up mentions a starting date for the meme that is after the date the thread was started.

Posted by JonHecht (Member # 9712) on :

I hate you all. I have wasted the past 20 minutes trying to find the origin of the meme.

Interesting. I had heard people express the idea that it started on Hatrack, but I'd thought at the time that they were joking around.

Here's the first thread.

Right. It spread from Thalia's thread to IMdb, and exploded outwards from there.

It doesn't start anywhere--that's the beauty of it!

I have a "Kiss me, I'm a jatraquera" t-shirt, but I'd be willing to get another one, if someone organizes this.

That Stilson quote is great. What thread did that one come from?

The shirt should say something about being real.

Absolutely no dude:cool:peek-a-boo.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

dude:cool:peek-a-boo denizens don't need a shirt.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I would definitely, definitely buy a "That's the beauty of it - it doesn't DO anything." t-shirt.

"Stilson had it coming." is delightfully sociopathic.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

I believe OSC has explained that he does not own the rights to make t-shirts bearing the tree logo.

There might be ways to legally make shirts with "Hatrack River" without permission, but I wouldn't assist in that endeavor or buy any such shirts made without OSC's blessing.

>_>

dudes, it's all [Cool] . We've got our Dew, and we've got our own thread.

I just want to know what that emoticon means, generally and in this context.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

It means "thank you for more or less restating my posts, without, you know, acknowledging them"? [Wink]

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Ah, I missed that.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

[Smile]

-o-

If dude [Cool] peekaboo is going to be on the shirt, then perhaps we need different shirts for each side of the the river.

One for the yellow-bellied sneetches and one for the star-bellied sneetches.

[Razz]

Which side is which, again? I always forget.

I like my "KamaCon: Prove Your Existence" shirt. It was one that survived the great T-shirt purge of '08.

It was difficult, but necessary. And followed by the great coffee mug purge.

I've purchased two shirts from cafe press, and I don't have problems with either of them. They wash just fine and the image doesn't fade or peel.

The shirt is of my own design, it's a simple black and white picture of Jesus crucified and a Roman Centurion stabbing him in the side with a spear, and the text "Jesus Christ is in Valhalla." So maybe the secret to getting quality shirts is blasphemy?

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Hmm . . . the one I bought says "Grammar is for Lovers," so would that confirm your theory or contradict it?

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

That's not blasphemy, dude. That's gospel truth.

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

No kidding.

At one time we had a t-shirt thread, with us thinking up slogans, and trying to get something that wasn't coyrighted. It's been years. Maybe it was coinciding with the first WenchCon?

"Stilson had it coming" was my own contribution, and one I still remember as having been my favorite, which says something about my vanity, I guess. [Wink]

I want a "Grammar is for Lovers" t-shirt too!

Can someone explain the "Stilson had it coming" thing?

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

If anybody wants a $5 gift certificate to CafePress I have some that I can give, but it has to be in the next couple of hours.

I'd need your e-mail.

It's a reference to the character(bully) in the first chapter of Ender's Game.

Stilson had it coming.

I started out simple. Feel free to use the image, of course. I'm going to have to do some actual drawing for the "it doesn't do anything shirt" so it's going to take me a bit longer.

That image doesn't really capture "Stillson had it coming". I'm not sure what image would but that one with the "kick him" is just not appropriate in my opinion.

Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :

Do you think it's the "kick him" that's the problem, or the actual graphic (or both)? My idea with making them 2d was to sort of reference dominoes as a metaphor for Ender's strategy. The joke, as I get it, is simple and I thought the graphic should be too.

Posted by brojack17 (Member # 9189) on :

We could do some good quotes from the Adjacent Titles Thread or just post an answer followed by "Begging a question".

Put me down for a "It doesn't do anything" t-shirt.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Me too.

Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :

Okay, I know it took me awhile, but I finally finished it. Even learned a few new tricks along the way! If you would like to fiddle with it, let me know, and I will email you the photoshop file (~6MB).

Have a look see.

I think the Stilson one should be a picture of a sneaker, with a little bit of blood on the toe.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Perfect, MB.

I think the "It doesn't do anything" t-shirt shouldn't how frustrated people because the goal of the shirt would be to make other people the frustrated people.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

I'm kind of interested in making a shirt that the average 20-something would consider wearing on a daily basis.

I'll play around and post the results.

Well, if that's the idea, what about this?

Ha!

I like it.

I don't get it.

Posted by Lisa (Member # 8384) on :

You look at it and ask yourself, "Okay, but I know what that was from... wait... what was it?" It's just a way of spreading the virulent meme into the non-online population.
