I'm baffled. I'm writing this on my laptop because the WiFi I depend on for internet access from my desktop has gone mysteriously kaput.

Unless my wife did something during the two days out of town (and I think she would have told me), it simply ceased working while I was okay.

It *claims* to be working when I first boot, saying that it's connected to the network and the signal strength is good. But neither IE nor Firefox can actually get through to the web. Trying to "Repair" the connection causes it to say that it can't renew the IP address.

Disabling and re-enabling does nothing. And both my wife's computer (which is connected to the router through a standard network cable) and the laptop (wireless) work fine.

I've scanned for both viruses and spyware. Nothing comes up.

I'm down to

1. Uninstalling and reinstalling the hardware driver

2. Blowing dust out of the computer, and finally,

3. Replacing the WiFi card, the last desperate option.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

Try pinging your router.

Try pinging yahoo.

Reboot your router before you go about doing anything else.

Do you have zonealarm and are you using XP?

I've tried rebooting both the router and the modem.

It claims it's getting a reply on ping from the standard router IP address. (What's the IP for yahoo?)

Yes, I'm using Zone Alarm on XP, though version 6.5, as I had severe problems with version 7. But I haven't changed any of ZA's settings, and ZA is configured to allow both browsers to access the internet.

There was a recent XP update that destroyed web access for ZoneAlarm users. Lisa started a thread about it.

Sterling:

Microsoft apparently released a security update for XP that breaks computers with zonealarm installed.

I think Lisa wrote about it in another thread...

Ah! Didn't consider the Microsoft angle. Thanks.

EDIT: Although, come to think of it, my laptop is also running XP and ZA. Weird... Maybe I haven't downloaded the most recent Windows Update.

Maybe I should make sure I don't...
