Oh my god it burns, it burns, it burns so much hargigerk. It BURNS! And when I tried to swallow it burned all the way down. And then it burned again, all the way back up and out.

Well, some people as it would surprise you are impatient, and would tend to not read instructions or would read them and indeed read them but skimmed over the important parts.
And then comes the burning as a healthy kick in the ass to remind us where impatience leads.

I remember reading this mystery thriller in which the man character was this drunk who would blearily roll out of bed, scrounge around for a cup of cold coffee and then chew three aspirin. He made a big deal about how rockin tough he was. And then I think his brother was set on fire, so he got drunk again and went through the whole tablet chewing thing again..
So anyways..

I like the taste of aspirin.
RRR, my mum always said pills will work quicker if you chew them instead of swallowing whole.

Hadn't you ever noticed that advil burns just a tiny bit when you put it on the tip of your tongue?
I got an actifed caught on the back of my tongue one time and started to disolve (the actifed, not my tongue). It didn't burn but I thought the bitter would never go away.

wikipedia says advil = ibuprofen. I never noticed ibuprofen to burn. does it have anything else added?

If you want it to act faster, you take the quick-release Advil.
And you don't chew that either.

No, but the non-chewable Advil is not formulated with the buffer that will keep it from being an irritant. Some people also get stomach aches if they take ibuprofen on an empty stomach.

my stomach quickly became empty. I hope no one finds out I puked in the hallway. At least I had the good sense to do it on the tiled floor and not the carpeting.

Once when I was in high school, a guy in my class had a headache and asked to go to the bathroom so he could get a drink to take some Tylenol. The teacher wouldn't let him go, so in a fit of pique, he crushed the Tylenol to a powder on his desk, pulled the ink out of his ballpoint pen, and snorted the Tylenol.

I've chewed aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen (not all at once!) as well as let them dissolve slowly in my mouth. None of them taste good, but I wouldn't say it was traumatic. "Burning" I don't understand at all.

Actually I've taken broken Advil as well and regularly take it on an empty stomach and do not have any problems.
I think some people are more sensitive to the irritants than others. My brother HAS to eat before taking Advil or he has stomach cramps and sometimes throws up.

When I was in high school we kept ibuprofin or other painkillers, or medicines in Altoids tins in our purses. I don't think anyone ever got caught. (I carried benadryl after an allergy attack that made it impossible for me to get to the nurse's office)

I got an ulcer recently, and I am thoroughly convinced it was from my overuse of Advil.

From my understanding most ulcers are caused by a bacteria, which many factors can contribute to but which aqcuisition of that bacteria and genetic predisposition seem to be among the most important. Of course, IANAD, but my sister gets ulcers and that's what she explained to me.

I've read that online several times, but I've never had a doctor offer to treat my ulcer with antibiotics. *shrug*

Many ulcers are indeed caused by the Helicobacter Pylori bacteria, but not all. NSAID use can also cause ulcers.
As with any hole in your digestive tract, consulting a physician is a good idea.
