There are some good options out there. IMGBurn is pretty decent, and it's lightweight which I like. It is available via download.com - pretty decent indicator of not containing malware. It doesn't mount images as drives, though, IIRC.

Microsoft provides a virtual CD drive tool, if you're a windows user. Or you could try MagicISO which I've used and seems to work just fine. (Also available on download.com.)

For mounting Daemon Tools. For burning, Windows 7 comes with image burning. I can't remember if Vista had it, but XP doesn't AFAIK.

I was thinking of MagicDisk, sorry - which is kind of an add on to MagicISO, but only for the mounting task. You're right, the free edition of MagicISO isn't much good for burning.

The answer is the same as for any other software you might require: Emacs, of course. Even if by some miracle it doesn't have a DVD ripper, you can easily write one yourself. :nods:

Emacs does have one, but you have to download it separately and it doesn't work nearly as well as the one that comes bundled with vim.
