Ok, so recently I've started playing again and I'd like to discuss strategy, maybe trade cards.

I made two new decks last night, one an Exodia deck, the other an Elemental Hero/Warrior deck. If any one knows good cards with effects like "Sangan" or "Witch of the Black Forest" I would love to hear about them [Smile]

BTW I'm not really interested in doing any tournaments, maybe here and there, more interested in just playing casually.

(Would especially love to hear about any magic/trap that are especially good at stalling, I do have Swords and Scapegoats, any info is great [Big Grin] )

Oh yeah, T:man is back! [Party]

Start playing magic.

Yeah, pretty much. [Razz]

I have my Blue Eyes White Dragon deck, its pretty good though I run into the problem of either too many FoSD or too few of em and Lord of D.

However the problem here is that I can tell at a glance your deck is probably horribly obsolete in terms of all the recent sets and would probably lose often and horribly stalling doesn't work as great as it used to.

If I can find it I'll dig up my Limited Rules version of my deck and sideboard that I use, I win alright number of times.

I also play YuGiOh Online, though thats pretty expensive itself (as you have to spend money on virtual cards).

Also Magic has its own flaw, basically any tournament type 2 legal deck (and thus the most fun and balanced) wont last more then 3-6 months thus forcing you to constantly spend money to keep your deck current and also has the unfortunate problem that if you like playing themed decks (like for me Dragons) your screwed.

This is why I tend to prefer YuGiOh absurd rule interpretations notwithstanding at least I get to keep my Dragons the whole way.

Oh God, I quit MTG for Warlord and then when I got out of that I sold everything and havent looked back.

I tend to boo MTG these days, I worked hard to find my Collosus of Sardia and build a deck that could handle her and then they go and re-print my best card. All my friends could then afford just to have her around in case they could afford the tap 9 mana cost each turn, while still playing decks that I had to struggle against.

There is also Type 1 and Extended tournament formats Blayne.

-------

There's also this really interesting format called "pauper." Essentially all of the cards in your deck must be commons, (no uncommons, rares, mythic rares.) It makes for some very interesting decks as any set can be used. So while you don't get the super powerful cards, you instead make decks that work on a theme and sync well.

Rumor has it that WoTC might make a new format that would allow all sets from Masques on (though it might be fixed on some other set). It would be sort of like an extended extended format.

Posted by Raymond Arnold (Member # 11712) on :

One of the interesting Magic formats that they discussed on dailymtg.com was "make your own standard." You got to pick any two blocks plus any core set and build a deck using only cards from those sets. (with certain cards just banned). It kept the overall power level down without restricting creativity that much. It's not an official format but it's the guideline I generally go for in casual play.

I stopped playing yugioh because I wanted to stop bleeding money. I always wanted to play magic, but I'll wait till I have exposable income.

Until then, I challenge you to a pokemon battle!

My Exodia deck does lose alot, but wins just as many times. Winged Kuriboh, Transcendent wings, and Winged Kuriboh Level 10 save me a lot. Raigeki helps too. If I get Exodia Necross out I win. (not to mention getting exodia) But Necross is much easier to pull out.

The main people I play, regularly, are a Spellcaster deck. (He has, and uses, Final) A less structured deck that mainly pulls out high atk monsters quickly, and a Gemini deck (Only played this guy a couple times, don't really know all that much about his deck)

I would love any, and all, advice or tips on deck types [Smile]

I really don't know all that much.

Sorry but Magic is extremely boring [Razz]

I'm trying to comprehend a mindset in which Magic is boring but Yu-Gi-Oh is not (I can comprehend a mindset in which they are both boring, but not where one is and one isn't).

Its utterly impossible to have a snow chance in hell to win a type 1 or extended game with a dragon themed deck, you'll always run into people with infinite damage fireballs in type 1 and if extended goes back far as I think it does has its own problems.

Posted by Raymond Arnold (Member # 11712) on :

Well, to be fair, some of those fireballs are coming out of the mouths of dragons. But yeah, it's hard to find a format that's fun in the "traditional" way where you can keep a single deck for any length of time.

That said, there's plenty of room for casual play (and not-so-serious tournament play).

Yugioh makes sense to me, the rules are not at all difficult to understand.

Did anyone else here ever play Warlord?

Posted by Raymond Arnold (Member # 11712) on :

I think I tried a little when I got a sample pack in a Dragon Magazine. It suffered the biggest stumbling blocks that card games face, which is requiring a critical mass of players to start playing for it to become fun.

Posted by AchillesHeel (Member # 11736) on :

I was lucky enough to have that for a while, by my poor funding and the thinning of the herd stopped me. I still like the game which is more than I can say for the others, the entire rank system added alot of thinking room.

I unfortunately can't, "Stop Having Fun Guys" Syndrome, I beat someone in casual play with my type dragon reanimator deck and then they go and pull out professional decks specifically to beat it when my deck is more along the lines of competiting against type two.

I would concede Magic the Gathering as 'better' then YuGiOh in the same way EVE-Online is better then World of Warcraft, Magic has a great deal more complexity, a larger variety of more useful cards and the game never ever attempts to pretend its about strength but about combinations of abilities and games almost of deep strategic thought before the first card is actually drawn.

My younger brother for example played in tournaments and had over 9000* cards memorized and could after 30 minutes of quick google searching to double check the errata build me a deck of whatever theme i proposed.

However as to why I and others might find YuGiOh as funner is in its simplicity, the game has a very clear goal, get the biggest strongest monster out and get it to attack the player and do as much damage as possible.

The game has alot of support to accomplish this while having very little or limited alternatives (direct damage is pathetic) and alternate ways of playign while annoying are all doomed.

That and it actually has a very well popularized anime to give the game additional popularity that wasn't a naked attempt at milking the cash cow.

I never play tournaments and haven't bought MTG cards in about 6 years, although I have traded a few to friends. But every once in a while a few friends and I decide to get together and play a few games.

It's worth noting that Magic, at this particular time (Rise of the Eldrazi) is particularly about getting out the biggest, baddest monster. (Release events for Rise of the Eldrazi start this friday).

And no, it won't still be about that in another 2 years, but in the intervening time you may notice that a) since last year, they've really been trying to push "summon bigger and bigger monsters" as a viable theme in tournament, because they know it's something that new players like. 15/15 monstrositities won't be the norm forever, but the general style of play associated with them will still be there. b) once you get into the game, you may find that it's versatility really is awesome. If you want to keep playing straightforward beatdown decks, that'll always be a possibility. And if you want to play bizarre combo decks, that'll be a possibility too.

Blayne: you may try just re-tuning your deck against whatever casual decks are common in your playgroup. If they don't feel underpowered against you, they won't feel obligated to bring out the "big guns" to beat you.

So I recently competed in Regionals here in Illinois, won three of eight duels. I played a E-hero/Evil Hero deck.

Too many damn frogs.

I miss using ym deck, here's the rundown:

Fiend's Sanctuary
Monster Reborn
Monster Reincarnation
Kaibaman
Spear Dragon
Dark Core
BLUE EYES WHITE DRAGON!!!! x3
kaiser Sea Horse (Moderately useful)
shadow Spell
Ancient Rules
Polymerization (I really shouldnt be using this as using Blue Eyes Ultimate never wins me duels)
Sangan
Enemy Controller
Soul Exchange
TYRANT DRAGON (FOR FUN!)
Lord of Dragons (x2)
Brain Control
Flute of Summoning Dragon
A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon
Card Destruction
Mystical Space Typhoon
Silent Doom (ressurection)
Tribute to the Doomed
Luster Dragon
Negate Attack
Spirit Ryu
White Horned Dragon
Megamorpth
Vorse Raider
BURST STREAM
Blizzard Dragon
Cost Down
Heavy Storm
X-Head Cannon
Z Metal Tank
Y Dragon Head

Yeah I managed to almost perfectly copy Kaiba's deck and surprisingly with a few adjustments it kinda works, its almost as flexible as Yugi's without relying on controlling fate.

This is also not including my side board and fusion deck which includes Tiamat (Five Headed Dragon) and the entire XYZ series, if you want we could play online using YGO Virtual Desktop which is a freeform YGO platform or I can introduce you to YGO-Online.

My friends just convinced me to start playing magic again, and I'm getting my butt kicked consistently.

What are some MTG deck-building tips? Do I need to look o line for specific combos and build a deck around those to be competitive?

Magic has a considerably higher learning curve, your best bet is to go on a proper MTG fan site, give your idea of what kind of theme you want and then have someone else build the deck for you while explaining why he chooses which cards he does.

My younger brother who was professionally into magic had memorized roughly 9000 different cards, their states, their value and their abilities and regularily practiced "mental magic" (where you take a random deck of MT commons and each card you and your opponant draws from is any card you imagine it to be that exists so long as the mana costs match).

Knowing the majority of cards is pretty much key to consistent deck construction.

Ooh, I would love to Blayne, what is YGO online?

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

YGO Virtual desktop you can google for and probly find a graphics pack for, this lets you make a custom deck and play it online (albeit freeform).

YuGiOh Online is an official MMORPG released by Konami, the problem with it is like MGT:O the cards in it you have to pay real money for but you get a game experiance closer to the gameboy advance games.

Posted by T:man (Member # 11614) on :

Okay so YGO Online costs money, and YVD doesn't?

Posted by T:man (Member # 11614) on :

Super confused on how to duel someone using YVD

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

I think you need to log onto the chat program and simply ask someone if they want to duel, do you have msn?

Posted by T:man (Member # 11614) on :

Nope, I figured it out eventually. [Smile]

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

Yes but then how are we going to play if I dont have a means of contacting you!?

Posted by T:man (Member # 11614) on :

My email is displayed on this site, just shoot me some mail, I'll be able to get back to you pretty soon. (Email goes right to my phone)

I won't be able to play for about a week, or two, because we'll be driving to montana and it doesn't work on my blackberry.

If you're on right now my chat name is Soop1 and my YVD username is Hafrael.
