...at an intersection at the bottom of the hill I walk up in the mornings. There's a pub, a house, and a forest surrounding the intersection. The keys had one of those lock/unlock devices and a single car key. There were no other doohickeys.
I left it on the stoop of the pub, hoping that the person who lost them would retrace their steps and see them.
Is there something else I should have done? Somewhere else I should have put them? What would give the owner the best chance of locating their keys?

Police maybe (pub owner maybe if he/she looks trustworthy), leaving car keys outside might not be the best idea if an untrustworthy third-party gets to them

Find the car to which they belong, leave a note on the inside of the window telling them how to find you. Meet the attractive recently graduated with a masters in american lit. woman and begin a new wonderful stage in your life by simply returning her keys.
