Windows seems to have some options for reading text out loud. There are some articles online I'd like to listen to while I work, but I can't figure out how I actually do it. When I search for "text to speech" all I get is the text-to-speech configuration control panel.

Anyone know how to do this?

There are web-based apps out there. Do some googling.

I'm trying that but it's taking more time than I have time to devote on my work break. Hoping someone knows of one off the top of their head.

So far everything ends up having a limit on what it'll do for free.

Don't we all.

I know that my Mac could do this pretty easily, and it looks like Windows is supposed to be do it easily as well, but I can't figure out how.

Try looking for Windows Narrator. If you've got Windows 7, just type it in the search bar.

I found that, but is there a way to use it without reading every single line of text on the screen?

Well, you could try looking at the web page I posted. If you don't want to scroll all the way up there, here -- I'll post it again. Merry Christmas.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Hear-text-read-aloud-with-Narrator

It lists keyboard shortcuts to do things like "Read the entire selected window", "Read the items that are selected in the current window", and "Read the current page".

There are a lot more detailed commands, but I lost interest quickly. I just have my Kindle read to me when I need a comforting robot-voice.

Please, Raymond clearly wants you to come to his house, install the application, show him how to use it, make him a cup of tea, and then leave, and be *grateful* that he asked for your help.

I'm sorry for seeming ungrateful. I do appreciate the help. I had spent half an hour googling and trying Windows Narrator prior to posting this thread and I was trying to get back to work and assumed Herblay's link was just a "here's Windows Narrator" as opposed to a "hear's how to use it."

I'll give it another try next time I'm at work. Thank you.

It's okay Raymond. They're just bitter because you said it would be easy to do on your mac.

On the other hand, until you said that, everyone was being pretty unhelpful. I'm pretty sure the only reason Herblay jumped in with a solution was because he felt obligated to prove PCs are just as good. [Wink]

Okay, I read the entire link Herblay, and no, it doesn't answer my question: Narrator reads, at minimum (before you start turning on additional settings) the title of every window when you click on it and a brief description.

At this point I'm not terribly worried about it anymore. I'll figure something out eventually. Just wanted to express vindication that my original 5 second glance at the link had proven accurate, and annoyance at my followup question rather unwarranted.

Ehh, it works for me.

I had seen something in this area a bit ago that was quite useful; will let you know if I find it again.

For windows xp; cause it is standard >;o

I beleive it tells you how to make it speak in Microsoft document by highlighting and pressing a few keys..... copy, paste, buttons, and words...

A couple of kids in my class a year ago, got in trouble for making word document say some fun things ._.
