I've been thinking about starting a new thread, and was wondering if anybody had any advice about doing do.
I would like it to be just contentious enough to get to a third page, but not so contentious that it ignites a forum-searing flame war. I would prefer that it not attract Dobie/Ace of Spades, but as long as their participation doesn't become the focus of the thread I won't mind terribly if they appear.

I too was thinking about making a new thread, I was gonna call it Old Baby Thread.

Not bad, not bad. You need a hook, though.

I think only certain people should be able to start new threads, and only after extensive screening by a board of forum-unaffiliated experts.

As long as members of the board are required to wear powdered wigs when they meet, I'm cool with that.

Aargh, those wigs are itchy. Incidentally I am currently wearing a thick coat of powder white makeup with big red circles over my cheeks.

Exactly. Here's the thing--members of the board by definition can't be members of the forum. right? And we want to increase the number of active posters on the site, right? A desire to stop wearing itchy wigs will undoubtedly cause board members to disqualify themselves from board membership the only way they know how--joining the forum.
It's foolproof. With one swift stroke, we put in place a body that increases the potential quality of new threads and drive up forum membership!

So only certain people would be allowed to make new threads, but only after bribing a board of itchy wig wearing experts. Do the thread making elite wear any silly requisites? I believe in an act of posterity in regards to The Board and their uncomfortable wigs the thread-makers should each wear a fake mustache. It communicates a common trait between thread-maker and board member, and displays the thread-makers lower position to the board member and their utmost highest positioned false hair accessory.
Along this line of thought, one could deduce that a lurker would wear hobbit foot hair and a regular forum poster a merkin.

Not sure why I added thread to the thread title, maybe thats just how I thought of it in my head.
