Might anyone on here be a fan of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden? I've gone through all the novels and short stories and am impatiently waiting for "Ghost Story" to come out in July.

Thoughts? Theories who might be behind the murder that ended "Changes"?

I have that on pre-order. As far as the murder, could be anyone- good, bad or ugly. Without spoilers, I don't think you can discuss much.

Scholarette, have you read the first chapter of Ghost Story posted online yet?

I haven't read all of the books, but I've enjoyed the ones I have.

I haven't read the short stories. The online chapter does seem to take the good guys out of the running, but they could have been manipulated into it by the bad guy or a false promise. I am worried about Molly and Dresden's brother. Potential for major badness there.

I think it was Kincad, because it happened exactly the way he said he would do it if he were ever hired to kill Harry.

Nothing personal, just business.

I just wonder how the Archive would react, and if Kincad would risk his relationship with her, and with Murphy. Even if all Murphy was was a fun time.

Kincaid said he would go for a head shot though. And he wouldn't do it for no reason- we'd need to find his employer.

Kincaid could do it if he were paid to do it. But it depends how much his relationship with Ivy has changed him. I could see Ivy darn near killing Kincaid for offing Harry, if she found out. And I don't know how he could keep it from her.

Maybe a member of the Church who is sick of a wizard holding onto the swords?

And who do you think Harry is going to try and contact first, Mort or Bob?

I hadn't considered Bob, just assumed Mort would be who he contacted. But Bob makes a bit more sense to me.

I was online watching interviews with Butcher, and he was saying how he tends to have a 'sidekick' in each of his novels. It doesn't always work that way, but generally there's one person who gets to suffer along with Dresden for most of the book. The clearest example is Butters in 'Dead Beat'.

I think Bob would make an awesome sidekick, considering he's one of the few characters who are sure to be able to see Harry and interact with him.

Do you suppose he'll look any different since Harry will be seeing him as a spirit as well?

Another question I've been chewing on...is Harry still the Winter Knight? Or is his current predicament essentially a loophole out of it?

Gah! Spoilers! I'm in the middle of Changes.

I love, love, love this series. I have about half of Side Jobs (stories) and about half of Changes left. It just gets better and better.

Well, finish Changes before you finish Side Jobs, since the final novella in Side Jobs takes place after Changes. Enjoy. [Smile]

Does he have a hold on Bob anymore? Remember the time he saw Bob and realized how dangerous he was? He was always worried that Bob might slip his control. Does Bob have reason to help him or be servile to him anymore?

He named Bob. He also lived with and interacted with him for years. He's probably the only 'owner' of Bob's to ever treat him like a person, and not just a tool of some kind. I could just be naive, but I'd guess that Bob might actually consider Harry a friend...or as close to a friend as a spirit of intellect can have.

In Dead Beat, Harry was able to contact him just by uttering his name, even while the skull was not in his physical possession. There might be a bit of loyalty there.

I guess the question is what is Bob's nature when not under someone's control. Bob reverted to how he was under the evil guy, perhaps with Harry gone and nothing else going on, he would be someone different. Harry did manage to bring out the "good" side in Lash, which is pretty impressive.

I think he is free of Mab since the job kinda requires a body. I actually thought it possible that one of the good guys did it hoping to break Mab's hold on him and then bring him back. I am rather glad they didn't go with that- though I can still see their being a puppetmaster who convinced a good guy that was a decent plan. [Smile] I hope that being the winter knight has more consequences then it has so far. If he gets a body back, I think it should come with knightiness.

I agree that as long as he's a spirit he's free of Mab. But I'm going on the assumption he'll Houdini his way out of that particular handicap. [Wink]

As for Bob, as long as no one else takes possession of his skull is there any reason for him to act any differently than we've normally seen him act with Harry?

Not that I see. Remember that as he is now he pleaded with Harry NOT to make him remember, or be like he was before. Harry also ordered him not to ever respond to any command to ever do that again, even from any other master.

I'd say Bob will help him quite a bit.

Molly knows nothing about Bob. It has been mentioned a few times that she doesn't know. Harry's brother does know and can use magic. I have a feeling that's who will get Bob.

Jim Butcher has said death will not free Harry from his obligation to Mab.

This subject has already been dealt with in one of the short stories, The Warrior. If you haven't read The Warrior go do that now. Seriously, it's awesome.

My gut tells me it isn't Kincaid. He's the obvious choice and I don't think JB will go the obvious route here.

Are any of you gamers? Have you checked out the Dresden Files RPG?

I haven't finished Dance With Dragons yet. I need to get through both of these by next Wednesday to avoid hearing spoilers at GenCon.

I'm about halfway through, so spoilers for those who are not at least that far.

I'm not liking the book. Hard to read. But, oh so well done. Butcher is making me face the uncomfortable things Harry did in Changes. And I don't like it. Obviously Harry doesn't either. It's just a real tough book to read so far. I hope there is a happy ending, but I'm afraid for at least one person there won't be. That person seems so far gone.

From what I've heard, the first half is all setup. The second half really gets moving. But a lot of people seem to think that it's one of the weakest books in the series.

I hope not. I thought the first two books were BY FAR the weakest. I really want to enjoy this one.

Mild spoilers, no specifics....

Um, I would say it's pretty weak. Most of the book looks backward, not forward if you know what I mean, but that seems to fit because what happened in Changes was so significant, it makes sense everyone would still be dealing with it.

FWIW, I didn't really enjoy the book as much as I have enjoyed Dresden books in the past.

Dang. I was saving this book for my cruise next week. Maybe I'll have to hit something else on my queue instead:
- The second Hunger Games book
- The third book in Song of Ice and Fire
- Most recent Terry Brooks book, Bearers of the Black Staff

If you want light-hearted fun reading in the urban fantasy genre, try Hounded. I loved it! There are three books in the series so far and a fourth on the way. I've enjoyed all three.

Loved it. I agree it was 'weak'...but I think it had to be. It was very much a transitional story, but it needed to be told.

***SPOILERS***SPOILERS***SPOILERS***

Things I loved:

Butters
Bob
Butters & Bob as a team.
Mort's growth as a character.
The ending with Demonreach and Mab. Made me very happy, and very curious to see what happens in the next book.

Let the waiting begin again!
