Well, the past two reviews have shown our beloved storyteller running into troubles with MP3 players. I find this somewhat ironic considering his almost visceral distaste for the appearance, function, and price of the iPod.

Now, I'm no Apple nut. I'm a cross platformer and enjoy the nuances of both Mac and Windows operating systems, and I've used several types of Mp3 players in my time. I was an early adopter of Rio's Mp3 playing class of CD-Players and their 5 gig HD player that came out in 2000/2001. I've messed with a Dell juke box and other iPod copycats to see if their functionality improved upon the basic structure of other mini-HD players; they haven't.

These days, the iPod is the beast to beat when it comes to reliability and range of use. I've never had trouble with it (although some people have noticed battery deterioration), it continues to work beautifully, and iTunes has the most efficient and user-friendly interface I've yet to encounter for transfering library files to the player itself (yes I've used WMP and Real).

I've also purchased a Griffin FM tuner for my iPod that works like a charm. No snow or static coming from my car's speakers.

Now, I may just be lucky, but seeing how many players OSC has gone through, I almost want to show him how easily mine works.Hell, I installed Linux on it the other day. Mac interface be damned!

So what's the deal Uncle Orson? Have you found an MP3 player that does everything you want it to do, and it does it well?

Personally, I think OSC suffers from a psychological aversion to fads, conformity, and a propped up sense of exclusivity. iPods, Cult of the Mac, 'The Left', 'Smartland', Hollywood, and Homosexuals are all ideas of clicky groups that OSC feels are based on some selfish and irrational assertion of equivalence or superiority.

I love his writing, and I honestly believe he's one of the more intelligent people on this planet. But his generalizations and attacks on objects and people he assumes great knowledge of really harm my perception of his character.

I just wish he wasn't so bitter at things I like and support.

In Conclusion:
iPods are a good choice. OSC is a great author. I am a poor rambling forumer.

Your thoughts?

My thought is that it really doesn't matter whether OSC likes the iPod or not.

I agree with you Train. That he dislikes "fads" and the like.. But im right there with him on that. Napoleon Dynamite for example.. loved it.. about two months later everyone started quoting it.. and then i loathed it. Another example... saw Phantom of the Opera in san Diego , a really nice theater Panteagas (sp?) Then all of a sudden the movie comes out and everyone is singing the music, and it totally bothers me. The iPod is nice, but there's people at my school who just have the earphones... the white ones.. They dont even own an ipod, they just want to look cool.

More power to OSC

Hear, hear! I love my iPod, clique-y or not. It does everything I want it to do, it's easy to use, I love iTunes, and I like white. I have nothing to compare it to, since I have no need to try a different MP3 player.

Obviously it doesn't matter if Uncle Orson doesn't like it, too . . . but he should!

That's something that we share then.

I guess I fail to see the difference between a person that buys something because it's a fad and a person that avoids something because it's a fad. In both cases you're making a decision based on how other people view it, not on how it affects you personally.

So here's my question. Why would you allow a fad to rule your life by purposely avoiding it? And how is that any better than buying into a fad?

I agree with you, and because of that I don't allow fads to rule my life. It's just that I have a natural predisposition against fads, so that if all things are equal, I will go against that which is more popular.

I'm with Camus here. Purposely avoiding the mainstream is conformity all the same.

Choose based on rational and personal reasons, not because of the popularity or lack thereof.

I've heard through a friend that a mutual acquaintance won't watch "Firefly" because of the cult following. I flatly cannot understand this reasoning. Whom, exactly, does that benefit?

<---- proudly conformist . . .

To the extent of smugly saying, "yeah, but I had my iPod before it was so cool."

Which lets someone who conforms to a fad ALSO conform to the prevailing view that it's good to be a NONconformist.

I like my iPod because once I got all the junk for installation, everything worked. I had a SanDisk mp3 player which had system glitches and programming problems, and a Sony that had playback errors. Nice thing about joining the iPod fad is that it means I surrender all intelligent thought to the system. This might be a problem for some people, but it's perfect for a person who's sick of tampering with inferior players like me.
