"Lost Boys" is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I say this as someone who OSC probably would not like -- agnostic, liberal, Clinton supporter, etc. I love violent, gory horror books and movies and picked up "Lost Boys" because I heard it had a horror, or at least supernatural, element.

I have never read a book in one day. Emotional movies make me cry all the time, but I have never cried after reading a book. Lost Boys changed that. It was engrossing from page one, not because of some page-turning plot, but due to great characterization. I honestly cared about this family and enjoyed spending time with them, just for the sake of having their company and not because of some plot they were mixed up in. I read this book in one 12-hour span and was emotionally spent at the end. Lost Boys is the only book to make a cold-hearted cynic like me cry.

While not prescibing to any particular faith, I respect everyone who does and takes their religion seriously. I'm glad I had the opportunity to glimpse the dynamic of a modern Mormon family, as the media will often play up the polygamy angle and vilify an entire religious group for the actions of a few members.

Mr. Card, if you read through this rambling mess, I just wanted to say thank you for a fantastic book. Your World Watch essays can get under my skin, but you definitely seem like a genuine, decent human being, and I wish you and your family the best.

Card doesn't strike me as the kind of person to dislike someone personally because of their beliefs. [Smile] I think you're good.

Lost Boys is a great book.

Lost Boys is great -- I too cried, and I've only ever done that with two other books. And so did my husband -- I don't know that he ever has!

Many of OSC's books, while the characterizations are great, seem to be primarily concerned with plot (which is one of the reasons I love them so much -- give me something to turn the page for!). Lost Boys spends a lot of time developing the characters and relations apart of the plot itself and you're right -- you really do care about this family by the end.

My mom is probably the only person I know who didn't love Ender's Game. She does like some of OSC's other books, mainly the historical fiction, but Lost Boys is the one that she always recommends to people.

Just to nitpick something here (sorry). I know you were talking about the misrepresentations of the media, but just so you know, there are NO polygamist members of the LDS church. Mormons are not polygamists, period. (Polygamy by a member will result in being removed from the church, pretty much instantly.)

The people who still practice polygamy are not LDS. They might be FLDS or something like it, but that has nothing to do anymore with the mainstream Mormon faith.

So in fact, the media vilifies an entire religious group for the actions of another religious group they have nothing to do with.

And, yes, Lost Boys is a pretty great book. Might make a great movie, come to think of it. You know what would be cool? If I had the hatrack superpower to, whenever I wanted, say, "I can't help wondering what ORSON SCOTT CARD would think of this! Orson?"

And then the next post would be OSC going, "Well ..."

Thank you. I had no idea, and it's not like the Dateline and 20/20 "The Man with Nine Wives" specials ever clarify that for us.

SPOILERS

I think OSC said in his review of the Sixth Sense that he felt Lost Boys couldn't be made into a movie because the endings are so similar, as are the struggles of the young boy in both stories.

It seems like I've heard OSC talk about a Lost Boys movie at some point -- but I can't remember when/where. He was saying that he wanted a lot of creative control (like unto Ender's Game) and that's why the project would be a slow-moving one it it ever happened at all.
