Has orson ever review the japanese movie or book Battle Royale? I'm pretty sure he hasn't, and i think he should. I would love what he thinks about the mass of killing in the movie.

It's definately not the best movie in the world. I feel like the only reason it has so much hype is because it's banned in the US.

It's an interesting speculation about how youthful passion would translate to violence, if violence were allowed and encouraged.
Some of the graphic violence was certainly unnecessary, though.
And, uh, it's most definitely NOT banned in the U.S. - you can rent it from Netflix, and some Blockbusters carry it, too.

Actually, I think it's an amazing character study of a situation that NOBODY knows how they'd react to unless they were placed into it.
It's horrific, not because of the violence itself, but because of what the teens are forced to go through. It's rough. It's traumatic. It really left me thinking.
The sequel, however, sucks balls.

Well, in my opinion its the best movie ever. And its not band, it just no studio is stupid enough to relaes such a horrible (yet still pretty freaking cool) movie in the US.
Think of the hate mail they would get.
And yes the second one sucked, but i still like it. (I curently having a Battle Royale Abessetion going on)

the way my friend described it I found it the most brilliant movie ever described.
Reminds me of Naruto during the Chunin Exam where you have about 4 dozen 3 man/woman teams competting with a 3 day time limit to aquire a matching scroll from another team.

As someone said it's not that it's banned, but it's not that releasing companies don't want it, it's that the Japanese owners want a ridiculous sum of money for region 1 DVD rights, and since the market for Battle Royale in particular has been eroded by imports and bootlegs more than just about any other unreleased foreign film the companies that would release the film on DVD don't see it as being potentially profitable--too much overhead and a saturated market do not necessarily make a good investment.
The sequel went deliberately radically political and pretty much virulently anti-american which turns off pretty much everyone--and it's not quite as tight a work of filmmaking, but it is fascinating to watch at least once.
Battle Royale, on the other hand, is a remarkably sophisticated study of humanity in the same manner of Lord of the Flies or Ender's Game. Sure its got kids with guns, but what the kids do with their relationships with one another that makes the film so worthwhile and rewatchable.
I'd give a slight edge to the director's cut because it incorporates a powerful backstory to the girl who plays GoGo in Kill Bill--on the other hand, it has a silly coda of deleted/extended dream sequences you've already seen in the film, it's like having DVD extra features added onto the movie rather than incorporated into it. If you go the director's cut, then there is a region zero two disc Korean set that has English subtitles and is in a brown case. The subtitles are acceptable, about of medium quality. Do not go for the single disc region zero NTSC edition of the director's cut from Tartan in the UK, the subtitles are horrendous. I've also seen a bootleg (OAR) tape that I presume is a telecine of the subtitled festival print, and it had the best subtitles of all the versions I've seen, but unfortunately that's not a translation that's widely available. www.dvdasian.com is where I buy my imports from, it's a pretty good site and very quick to deliver in socal.

I think that Battle Royale could be profitable if they did somthing thats not in any of the bootlegs. Like get voice-over for the movie. Or, if an america studio can get the rights to make a movie of there own based off battle royale.

English Dubbing would be so, so, so, so, so wrong for the film.
An American Remake would never happen. It would be the same case with what they were trying to do with the Ender's Game film back in the day - they'd want to recast it with early twenty-somethings.
Part of what made the Japanese version so visceral was the fact that the roles of the teenagers were actually performed by teenagers.

When Ender's Game came out it they initially wanted to cast Brad Pitt as the teenaged Ender with Petra as his love interest and Bonzo as his rival for her affections. I believe OSC shot them down by pointing out the Last Starfighter not making much money.
