I first read Seventh Son about 6 months ago I'd say, and I soon followed with the rest of the Alvin Maker series.
I was probably most impressed with Seventh Son though- the way OSC introduces everything and everyone was quite extraordinary. I have much of OSC's works- all the Enderverse, about 5-6 stand alone novels and this was before reading The Tales of Alvin Maker, and I must say that the second chapter of Seventh Son was probably one of the most amazing pieces I've ever read by him.
I think it's the second chapter anyways- where you first meet Alvin's father on the way to Hatrack River. I read the chapter and it was such a great read- I was thoroughly enjoying it, and by the end of the chapter I felt I knew Alvin's father extremely well. Then I finished it, and I was asking myself "wasn't that really short?" and it was about 1 page long exactly. At that point I was just- wow. I had never seen anyone flesh out characters so much in so few words, I was really amazed.

I love the whole series but the first book was really good. I like Alvin's father in the first book, but they don't really mention him often in the later books.
My favorite book is 'Red Prophet' though because everything seemed so...grim and hopeless.
By the way, I'm not sure how a page can be about one page long exactly.Posts: 161 | Registered: Jul 2005

The first five chapters of Seventh Son were written in one sweep, with asterisks dividing the different sections (from different viewpoints). They were published as the story "Hatrack River" in Asimov's before the novel came out. But since I was generally going to keep to the rule of one viewpoint per chapter through the rest of the book, I broke that first short story into very short chapters to establish the expectation.

I stumbled on it because my now fiance wanted a book on tape to listen to on our road trip to florida a couple of years ago. I found Red Prophet in the library and decided to give it a try, having loved the Ender's series and Pastwatch. Nana Visitor really brought the characters to life. It was the first time I had ever gotten a book on tape. I went back and bought the books. Taking my time though knowing the last one is yet to be released. I just started Journeyman.
