What is Medley's Mist-E Rub, and why did it build a house?

I've been wondering this for about eleven years now.

In Greensboro, a former employer of mine temporarily owned a large house by a lake (exactly as described in Ender's Game), which had been built by the inventor of Vick's Vap-O-Rub.
