I would like to challenge any gamers to send me screenshots from any video game that shows what you think is a good representation of battles from Enders Game or any of the battles in the Shadow books.

I'm thinking starcraft, although I'm not going to go to the trouble of actually getting a good screen shot.

I recommend Homeworld2 or Starcraft.

But the screenshot does not need to be terrific it just needs to be sent in.

And please be as inventive as you want. This is to see who has the vission to accomplish the task.

I'm curious as to how much of Ender's Game you can actually apply to Starcraft. Anybody want to play against me and find out?

Well the only descriptions of the Enders Game starphips were that they had Cruiers and smaller Fighters, so go nuts. [Smile]

The first Homeworld game was actually three dimensional, and the play actually made me think of EG a lot. The second Homeworld game requires ships to be (nearly) on the same horizontal plane to attack one another, making it much less like EG and much more limited. Space was also very large in HW 1, with vast expanses of emptiness. Which I can completely understand being taken out, as empty space makes for bored players, but the first game's space combat was much more realistic feeling, and much more EG feeling.

StarCraft is a great game. I don't think it's anything like anything described in Ender's Game, though.

Thanks for the correction Tom.

And Abyss I see what you mean and I agree. I just never figured out how to take screenshots on Homeworld.

Heres a thought perhaps the level where you have to up against that giant sphere of ships would be a good screenshot of the final Enders Game battle.

The sphere was Ender's first battle in Command school, I think.

Ah, Homeworld... great game, but I never had the patience to get too far. It's also a very hard game, and if you screw up progressively, you might have to start again from the beginning.

What sort of 'help' could be offer via e-mail? But yeah, maybe I'll bust it out again one of these days. Such a time-consumer though...

Hehe, but yeah... still no screens.

Thats not the point Blayne, the point is to show your personal ideas of what these battles look like, and hey if they turn out well enough maybe OSC himself will tell us his opinion of the screenshots. [Big Grin]

Then again, I can only hope i'm worthy. [Wink]

So why exactly are we looking for screenshots that fit Ender's Game that actually have nothing to do with EG in the first place? I mean, that's interesting and all, but what do we do with them?

Post em. I think he's trying to get people's mind's eye view of what the battles would have looked like.

Thankyou Eva that is exactly what I'm trying to do, besides the point of getting everyone who visits this board to start thinking of how they view these battles from their own perspectives.

And to Tom, are you nuts who doesn't want OSC to appear on his forum?!?!

No. I mean "why would he want to tell us what he thinks of our screenshots," not "why would Advent115 want OSC to pay him some attention." [Smile]

These aren't computer games, and they don't literally represent the battles, but I've always felt that the way you deploy and hold back pieces in Icehouse and IceTowers has a similar feel to Ender's battles.

These games are best described as action strategy board games without boards. Each player controls little plastic pyramids of a certain color; and in real time, players pick up and place them to attack other players' pyramids, defend their own, and create formations that score points. The games encourage players to come in with formations or plans of attack, as Ender's battles do (each player can be thought of as controlling an army), and you can play the games on any flat surface with any type of obstacle setup (just as the battle rooms can be outfitted with different formations of "stars"). You can also play by using giant pyramids and running around the room moving them, which makes the Ender battle parallels more visible.

I told OSC about this in person once; I don't know if he ever followed up on it.
