I am the first to admit I haven't been keeping up to date on the EG movie. But if it is going to be pulled off, I definitely think it needs a narrator.

A lot of people and film buffs believe that any director that needs a narrator isn't doing his job proporly. I could not disagree more. Quite a few of my favorite movies had narrators (Shawshank Redemption, Princess Bride, etc).

EG the book is a story of the mind, it tells what happens, without describing it, some could say it even breaks the rule "show don't tell". But as most good novels do, it spans a rather large amount of time, and the narration style of the book keeps things moving. What's more the book always has to do with what Ender is feeling and going through and his thought process.

The book lends itself to several forms of narration...through the officers constantly watching Ender, or the buggers as they try and understand and connect to their enemy, or even as a giant flashback during the trial of Graff.

Ender's Game is as much thought as it is action, as much philosophy as it is character interaction. And as such needs a narrator.

*plink plink * That's my two cents.

I agree, thats why it should be an Anime, they have narration all the time, to help explain "ideas" or to recap on the plot so far.

From a latest update on another forum OSC himself said that it woud be real people, and that having a narrator might destroy the movie. Thats why its going to be more like a buddie movie using Ender and Bean. By combining EG with ES OSC shortened his original script by several pages. But bare in mind that OSC himself says that he has no major control of the script at this point.

The narrator should be either the hive queen or Jane.

Blayne,

I think the number of adults in the whole world that would go see the movie (not having read the book) if it were anime is precisely 34. Anime==death at the box office

Sadly, yes. Then again, anime films usually only get a very limited release in North America, unless they're based on a popular franchise like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh or something.

No narrator, ever, not one WORD of narration. It worked in Shawshank, but wouldn't for this one. Narrators take you outside the action; I want the viewers immersed.

Yes, I agree with Uncle Orson on this one. A narrator would simply take you out of the perspective of Ender or Bean, whichever one a particular scene would be focusing on. Even a narrator at the beginning and the end like War of the Worlds would destroy it because people would be waiting for a narrator to explain a sequence of events, or to predict the structure of the next scene, which would simply destroy the movie.

Narrators only work in comedies and almost solely adventure-based movies, because there is no seriousness that would be broken with an unknown voice interrupting the viewer's concentration on the characters. And that is what Ender's game is about: trying to understand the characters. Plainly stated, a narrator would ruin the movie.

Not to mention the anime proposition...

See I am gonna agree with the no narrarator because of the character development. Also it wouldn't be true - there is no narrarator, all the great description comes from the characters and can be recreated from them. It'll be fine [Big Grin]

I told you Stone, OSC doesn't not want narration, and now you have it from the man himself. It will still be a great movie, just remember to trust in OSC and the studio he chose to make it.

Sweet! Total Immersion Movie. Sign me up. I hear that the probes they put into your brain are causing less irritation now. Even better would be to write the script so that we see everything through Ender's eyes. No need to cast an actor to play him. Don't you get it?!! The audience is Ender! I smell oscar here!!!

Thanks everyone! Well, I'll just hope the movie is everything it could be, and trust that if it isn't, it won't be made.

I think that the characters will have to narate their thoughts (not sure if that counts as a narater or not). At least with Bean, so much of his motivation comes from his thoughts making it impossible to develope a full character without that.

He checks all the little boxes. Or (e), all of the above, depending on the system. Or, yknow, what mph said.

Or, if your talking about the historical figure rather than the abstract "son of god", he was born Jewish in the middle east, IIRC in 6 B.C.E. Work it out.

Descolada don't worry about it, ES is just Enders Game seen through Beans eyes. The movie can't include very much of ES without losing trak of the important character, Ender. So don't worry.

p.s And if anybody notices a post from Shawshank tell him I'm after him. [Evil]
