Well, after several years of hunting I finally am nearing the end of my journey to collect EVERY 1st edition OSC book but I've run into a final hurdle that I need help with.

I have searched far and wide but am only finding soft cover 1st editions of Hart's Hope, Saints, The Abyss, and The Worthing Chronicle (Capitol, Hot Sleep, etc). Can anyone help me here? Were the 1st editions of those book never printed in hardback?

Thanks for your help. The next step is to get all these puppies signed (which I'm hoping to do before I move away from Virginia in a year) Can you imagine his face when I show up with every book he has ever written for him to sign? :-)

Hmmm... I might have the Abyss 1st addition, not sure I ran into it at a second hand book store. Running to my bookshelf now.

You know what I think I just found Capitol first edition, it looks old. I has "An Analog book" in big letters on the cover with "copyright 1979" on the inside and "first ace printing January 1979" that seems to be about it.

I also have an advance reading copy of Lost Boys, if you wanted to know =P.

Oh I just found my "The Abyss", I'm not sure if its a first edition tho. It has "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" written on the inside, but I'm not sure if thats any help. Copyright date 1989.

If it has a 1 in that line of number it is a first edition.

I have 3 Firsts

- Ender's Shadow
- Shadow of the Hegamon
- Shadow of the Giant

These books were only published in paperback, never had a hardcover edition. However, Saints will have it's first hardcover edition this fall -- available for Christmas sales. It will have an official announcement soon here on Hatrack.

I own a hardcover of The Abyss. UK Edition, I think. It doesn't clearly indicate whether or not it's a first edition. (Based on a google search, it appears to be a first UK edition.) I thought I'd seen a hardback copy of Hart's Hope, too, and it appears there's a UK edition of that as well.

I've been waiting for Saints to be available in Hardback for quite some time, and I'm very excited about it coming this year.

Thanks for the help ya'll! I still think my favorite covers of any OSC books are those ultra cheesy Hot Sleep and Capitol covers with scantily clad women. Its so NOT what I picture in my head when reading those books that think its quite comical. :-)

Not all books are released first in hardback. If the publisher thinks that the author is popular enough and/or the book is, or will be, popular enough (and therefore will sell at that price point - hardcover being about 3 times more expensive than paperback), then it is released in hardback.
