Definitely different. For example, I hear the released version will be longer.
I believe the usual plan is that as/if changes are made to the final version, the online version will be updated to reflect them (assuming they're in the first five chapters, of course). And I think "manuscript copy" also indicates that it hasn't gone past a copy editor yet, so likely-to-be-caught typos may still be present.

The released version will be longer by 1/2 page <grin>.
Books go through an editorial process. In this case, there were fact corrections, points of clarity, and editorial suggestions - as always - which I use when I believe in them and don't when I don't. The storyline does NOT change; the support structure for it, here and there, is shored up a bit.
Probably the most noticeable change is that without realizing it, I had given Reuben Malek a Croatian, not a Serbian, name. So you will soon detect a change in the five chapters posted - he will be Reuben Malich.
Most of the changes are fairly subtle, either language things or factual things to bring the novel more in conformity with cultures that exist in the real world, but to which I don't belong. I've had some good readers helping me. BUT as always, I'm sure that on precisely the points where I have the advice of, say, a native speaker of a language, ANOTHER native speaker will excoriate me (and people get quite nasty about this!) for daring to use their language wrong. Naturally, those letters are always full of howlingly bad English <grin>.

**absolutely random - so i feel no remorse for posting with no caps - but i dig the <grin> that orson scott card posts... somehow it's great to me.**
Also - I've been skimming quickly (and I do mean skimming quickly) the threads on Empire and I'm excited. I really wanted to read the first 5 chapters... then I realized that it wouldn't be enough for me and that when I did wind up reading the entire book I might end up not really READING them, thus missing some change that might have happened. I'm stoked for November...

I'm the same way cmc...I can't read the book until the whole thing is in front of me. It's too much of a tease for me! I want to be able to keep going. But I think it's awesome that OSC posts parts of his work for people who don't feel the same way.

That's interesting to me. I have often found mistakes in your use of Spanish, but I have never bothered to point it out or write about it before. I have wondered, though, if you had a consultant or were going with your own knowledge, and if you were using a consultant of some sort, I wondered if it was the same person each time. Anyway, I mention it now not to attack you or tick you off, but to suggest that you consider a third opinion, if you have not already done so, because there really are quite a few places where the Spanish is off, IMHO. (The most recent and egregious examples I found were in the Alvin Maker story posted in IGMS--although I suppose you could get away with saying that it is the characters who simply speak Spanish badly. )
Anyway, I apologize if I have given offense by commenting on it now.

Well, I like having these chapters online. No offense to our good host, but I won't spend every (euro)cent on books I have no idea about, whoever they make come from. So being able to read the first few chapters is as good as it gets. It doesn't reveal anything you wouldn't want revealed from later in the book, while giving you a pretty good idea about it. Hey, now. OFTEN make mistakes in Spanish? Compared to what?
I admit, though, that sometimes my Spanish and Portuguese run together in my head, and I'll inadvertently slip a usage from one language into a passage that's supposed to be in the other.
At least I never make the common mistake of having BRAZILIANS speak Spanish <grin>.

If I'm correctly understanding the question, then I guess the answer is compared to a native speaker. Again, though, I apologize if I'm being obnoxious. I wouldn't have brought it up, except I saw you mention it.

I read the Yazoo Queen and saw the language off as well but simply assumed it had to do with dialect and the time it was especially since they were Mexica slaves, andwell I assumed the Mexicas probably still mostly spoke their native language. I learned Spanish first and then learned English in school. I was born and raised in Texas. And like most folks like me we use spanglish, mixing both languages. I've also tlaked to so many spanish speakers from so many different countries and its all different. Sometimes I can't understand them. So really there aren't very many mistakes because there's no exact language. Also you have to remember they were slaves with probably no education.
