I just discovered Ender's Game last spring and have since read all of the Ender's Shadow series (just finished the last one today), although none of the sequels about Ender himself.
Anyway, in reading Shadow of the Giant, I noticed that we never learn the name of the 3rd baby who goes w/ Bean into space (8th of the ones Bean and Petra find). Did I just miss it and, if not, is there a way to find out? Is the baby even a boy or a girl?

No, you're right, I really thought they had, but they didn't. I had assumed when I was reading it that the third baby was a doubled Petra, but reading more carefully I see it makes no sense. Maybe they didn't name it because that way at least one of them leaving would be a little bit less of a Person for Petra. I had to give a step-daughter I had raised as my own back to her grandparents due to... well, the normal ickiness with divorces, and it almost killed me. I can hardly even imagine having to send three away forever.

Welcomd to hatrack, Libby. Like DDDaysh said, we don't find out the name or the gender of the 8th baby. We've had discussions about it here in the past, but as far as I remember we didn't come up with any answers as to why. There is another sequel called "Shadows in Flight" coming out in the future, so perhaps we'll get more info on the 8th baby and also the 9th, that went away with Randi.

I used to study Roman History. I preferred mythology at the time. Now I'd say I like grammar best.
I think Petra was broken up over sending Bean and the babies away, which was why she went all workaholic. When people engage in compulsive behavior, it blocks emotional pain but also any normal feelings.

I don't know that it would go over well with Bean's herritage then. I don't think they even tell us if it's a boy or girl. Like I said, when I read it before, I just ASSUMED it was another Petra, so that would have made it a girl. If it's a boy I bet he named it Nicholai. ;-) I love that name.

My guesses: If a boy, Nikolai (I like that name too!) If a girl, Elena (because I think it's a very pretty name for a girl).
