Someone on IMDb has posted an "update" that claims conflict between WB and our favorite author over plot elements are putting the prospects for the movie in peril.
They say they got the info from a recent booksigning (12/19).
Just curious about the accuracy of the statements, since I was terribly suspiscious of the faceless, nameless source.

Somebody else wrote something to us claiming Scott said that at a book signing. What he did talk about was past producers who wanted to do wacky things with the storyline like give Ender a love interest and make him 16. But ALL those plot elements are now stipulated in the contract and none of that every happened with Warners. It was all long before. Man, people who don't actually listen and make up their own stories make me nuts!

I really wouldn't be too dissappointed if that happened. If they can't keep it sound, what's the point of watching the movie. No one wants to see it turn into another JP.

Hmm. I can just see a re-drafted sequel where Bonso didn't die after all and comes back as the protagonist of the second book--- which is also massively altered in translation to film.

I like both Enders Game and 2001, but Kubrick is not the director for this more action packed story.

I know, I know. But, we are looking at hypotheticals. After all, I consider the whole making of this movie a hypothetical that will more than likely not happen - at least in OSC's lifetime.

Hypothetically speaking - the if you look at The shining, Full Metal Jacket, 2001, Dr. StrangeLove and A Clockwork Orange how can you say that he cannot direct action.

I can see it now, Petra with Enders' baby, but must be raised by Bean when Ender goes off on a collinization mission, but then returns, and fights bean to the death in the battle room.

I actually thought Kubrick would have been a good choice to direct an Ender's Game film but certain circumstances make that difficult... I personally think Spielberg would be well suited for the project, he's a great storyteller, handles sci-fi so well (see Close Encounters), and has a great way of working with children's stories and child actors (see Empire of the Sun, ET, among others). Now I am a little biased as he is admittadly my fav director of all time but still, the argument is there.

If I recall correctly, which I am perfectly willing to question, Spielberg wanted to make it so that Ender didn't commit the Xenocide after all. When OSC says the movie will not erase the book, he's assuming something like that doesn't happen.
But maybe this was someone's speculation on the kind of lame thing Spielberg would do and does not represent an actual conversation with Spielberg.

Im sorry but as a fan of Kubrick - when has the ending of his movies ever not made a fantastic connection? Also while he is a good director, his is a different kind of action ... darker ... they would have to leave in the Stilson and Bonzo fight scenes as that is where he would shine.

no the end of AI was all Kubrick. Satisfying David's love with manufactored love, just the sort of irony Kubrick loved, though Spielberg visually downplayed some of the oedipal aspects of the ending in the script (yes I read the script) which he wrote from Kubrick's outlines.

I think that the American film industry is finally ready to make book adaptations that are actually good. The books are still always better than the movie, but now movies can be a lot more faithful to the books.
I've actually been wanting the movie to be held back for a few more years, just so I could delude myself into thinking that once I graduate with my film degree that I'd be able to work on it. Ever since I've started wanting to become an editor, sometime in high school, I've dreamed of working on the EG film. I'd even do it for free! ^_^

I don't get why these movie guys can't just stick to the book. If the book actually did well, maybe the movie should use more than its title in the adaptation. Ender's Game is NOT the book to mess around with. I agree, if there is any romantic relationships with a teenage Ender, i will not see it. It can't be THAT hard to follow a book's plot.
