After attending the wonderful performance of Card's Taming of the Shrew earlier tonight, I got to thinking about OSC's connections with Shakespeare. With his recent work on Romeo & Juliet and the writing of Magic Street, which was based on A Midsummer Night's Dream, it seems he's spending a lot of time with Shakespeare. I'm wondering if this is only a recent development or if Shakespeare has been a big part of his life from the beginning. Are there some more references/nods to Shakespeare in the rest of his works?
Again, I'd like to echo that the performance was fantastic and the new script was brilliant. The updated jokes had us howling with laughter and the closing monologue from Katharina was really touching. My acting professor seemed a little surprised when I told her I was seeing a "modified" version of the play, but I can definitely report to her that if anyone could re-write Shakespeare, it's Orson Scott Card. I don't think you guys quite understand what I meant when I said I was a huge fan. I would've made the same drive just to shake his hand. Getting to watch the play he wrote/directed and laugh with him was icing on the cake.

OSC's apparent infatuation with shakespear has made me rethink some of my opinions of the latter, but I still can't say I see much of anything wonderful in Shakespear's plays. I intend to get around to reading the re-write though. Maybe there'll be something there I didn't catch before.
During my education, the only play by shakespear I actually enjoyed was "A Midsummers Nights Dream" (funny that that was the one he chose for Magic street) and I positively detested Hamlet by the time I finished my undergraduate work.

Is there any appearance's/performances closer to the canadian border? its about a 2 hour drive for me to reach Buffalo, from there id be willing to travel just about anywhere.

I also love reading these adaptations, and I'm looking forward to more from OSC. I'm also sooo jealous of the actors in the SVU theatre program. When I was looking at colleges (8 years ago,) SVU had just turned Mormon and didn't yet have a theatre department, so I chose to go to another school. Now I try to see the occasional show there, and they really have done a fantastic job of building a program. Unfortunately, my current Montana ZIP code keeps me from seeing this one
BTW, Launchywiggin, I thought you lived in Blacksburg, which isn't nearly as far? Do you still go to Tech?

I actually go to Radford University now, but I was in Johnson City visiting family before driving up there. So it would have only been a 2 hour drive from school.
I definitely hope to go to more in the future.

You go to Radford now? Awesome! I just graduated from RU last summer. Great school, great town. I mean, how often does a university's graduation ceremony feature the playing of "Scotland the Brave" by the official university Pipe and Drum corps?

Sweet- I finally know of one other Hatracker from Tennessee- I thought I was the only one. (Nowhere near Johnson City too much- but you know- it's a long state)
