When will the Great Snape Debate be published? now that the July 21st deadline is looming nearer I've noticed that Borders and Mugglenet have put together a similar book of essays, and was curious when we'd have a chance to pick up this one.

I dunno, but I anxiously await a spoilerdrama of the magnitude of the "Snape Kills Dumbledore" threads on LiVEJOURNAL. That was some awesome stuff, lulz-aplenty.

The release date on Amazon for The Great Snape Debate is September 2007. This seems weird to me -- surely the question will have been settled by then and therefore no longer hold any interest?

To quote Kacard from another thread:
quote:
I don't know when it will be out -- it can only be pre-ordered now. I'm sorry I don't have a publication date. Yes, definately before the final book comes out [Smile] You might be able to order it at your local Borders, but definately at Borders.com.
I was thinking it would be pointless, too, if it came out after the fact. But the Cards say it'll be earlier.

I picked it up yesterday at Border's. I only read the OSC chapter and I liked it quite a bit.

I didn't realize this was out already. I'll have to look for it. It's only about 90 days until we all find out anyway.

So what was OSC's stance? Does he think Snape is good or evil?

Edit: Uhh, according to Amazon and the Borders website, it has not yet been published.

OSC's chapter was in the "Snape is good" section. He mostly does a character study of Snape through all 6 books. What I liked was his analysis of the progression of the character (or possibly the mutation) as well as his possible motivations.

By the way, I was unaware of this book until I saw the display at Border's yesterday when I was looking for an old Tim Power's book (which they did not have) and decided to pick this up. I normally wouldn't, but with a chapter written by OSC, I had to. I hope he is getting a fair amount of the royalties since that is the only reason I bought it.

Well, we already knew Mr. Card thinks Snape is good, didn't we?

Doesn't he also think that Dumbledore is not dead? Or did he get over that?

He thought Dumbledore was -possibly- not dead up until JKR's little "he's really dead" statement at Radio City Music Hall back in 2006.

It's mentioned in his essay.

So is this thread where we all give our own theories one way or another?

I have mine.

My initial response to seeing all these hardcover books about the seventh Harry Potter book arriving about five months before it was published was one of irritation: can't these fanboys wait until Deathly Hallows comes out? But if it turns out that Orson Scott Card wrote part of one of them... hmm... maybe it's worth a buy.

lol... I don't know, I honestly try not to think about Harry Potter between books ever since the 5th book came out. I'm determined to read the series, cuz I want to know what happens, but it's gotten so depressing I don't want to think about it when I don't HAVE to.

I would love to see a pre-harry potter book about snape as a student at hogwarts... his struggle with James Potter, and how he got lured to Voldemort and back to Dumbledore... Maybe this will be filled in book 7, but if not, I think It would make a great story on its own.

I read OSC's essay in the book and I think he presents a very strong argument. I think he did miss one thing though. The chapter is titled Snape's Worst Memory (in order of the phoenix) not because Snape got his drawers shown to the school (Lupin says everyone at Hogwarts had got nailed with it that year, and Snape had to have been the first to use it on someone and to tell someone else how to perform it), but it's his worst memory because it's the scene, the moment in his life, when he called Lily Evans a mudblood.

at least that's my theory. [Razz]

Oh! That's interesting. I think that's good. I knew it was more than just getting hung upside down.

Yeah, I saw 'The Great Snape Debate' link on the site before I read 'THe Half Blood Prince'. Needless to say, I didn't find the ending quite as shocking as others may have.

I think Snape's a good guy, but I did think that Dumbledore was dead. I mean, come on, I've always liked Snape. I'm biased. I just *know* he's got to be good... Or at least very troubled. <Grin>

I think that the 'Snape is Good' section of that book has to be much larger than the 'Snape is Bad' section. I just can't see him being bad. I'm also very pleased that he's brilliant, as demonstrated in his textbook.

Okay, this isn't Nathan, this is his sister. I just finished the book and I asked Nathan, is it possible that Snape is under the Imperious Curse?

Okay, Nathan's sister again, when the Death Eater started to torture Harry on page 603, chapter Flight of the Prince, Snape yelled "No!" I have the feeling he only said the rest about Harry being the Dark Lord's because he needed a cover for wanting to protect Harry, which he did want to do.
And what was wiht the "DON'T CALL ME A COWARD!" thing? Didn't it stress on him not wanting to be a coward? I know it's probably pointless.
But I refuse to accept the fact that Snape may be a Death Eater, still. I am like, totally in love with Snape and I will not be happy if he ends up being killed because he's for Voldemort. That will thoroughly make me angry with the entire series, but I probably won't deny how brilliantly JKR did it all. *Sigh*

Nathan's sister here, sorry, I know I'm a posting junky, I can't help it, but anyway...
I just read one of OSC's reviews about what he thought would happen in the seventh book and everything, and I saw almost all of that stuff that he did! I thought the same thing about Snape and Dumbledore and everything. I agreed with OSC without even knowing it and I'm so proud of myself. I know, I'm such a loser, but I don't care.

I've started rereading the series last week, and I just made it through Goblet of Fire.

I had read The Great Snape Debate, and I enjoyed OSCs article and reasoning. Interestingly enough, I found the arguments for Snape being evil more convincing than the ones for him being good, in total (and I read the evil side first).

But, that is just based on their logic and arguments. Personally, I agree with OSC that Snape is good.

While rereading Goblet of Fire, I noticed two things I hadn't before, and that I don't recall reading in the Debate articles.

***POTENTIAL SPOILERS***

First, Voldemort tells the other Death Eaters (with Harry listening when he's tied up at the graveyard) that in one spot 6 people are missing. 3 are dead, one is a trusted servant at Hogwarts (we are meant to think this is Snape, but it turns out to really have been Barty Crouch, Jr.), one was too cowardly to come back (this almost certainly has to be Karkaroff), and one has turned against him and will be killed (which just leaves Snape in that spot!). At the end of GoF, Snape goes off to "join" Voldemort on Dumbeldore's orders, and we later learn (in subsequent books), that he "convinces" old Voldy to take him back and that he was just biding his time so he could be Voldy's inside man at Hogwarts. However, I wonder if Voldy is just playing with him and using him, letting Snape think he's got the better of him. Which, of course, means that Snape is indeed good.

The second item is when Harry is being questioned about Voldy's return by Crouch-as-Madeye and he sees Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Snape in the Foe Glass. Rowling mentions them appearing in the Foe Glass at least two times, and one is after Crouch is revealed for who he really is. So, if Snape is really evil, he would not have shown up in the Foe Glass, right? Unless, for some reason, he hated a fellow Death Eater and wanted him dead, but that doesn't seem likely. It is also interesting that Rowling points it out rather explicitly, but doesn't comment on it or have the characters remember it.

Anyway, just my thoughts.
