It's not being made into a movie: the '(VG)' after the title on IMBD means it's a video game entry.
As far as I know it's not based on any previous work.
As to if it's good, I've haven't played it. But the rankings at www.gamerankings.com are 71.7% for the PC version and 66.0% for the X-Box.

Every review I saw said the gameplay was average, plot was incredible, and they were hoping that the next one (I believe it's a trilogy) improved on the gameplay, but kept the storyline going the same way. Congrats OSC!

I really enjoy Advent Rising. I think it's a lot of fun. I thought that the gameplay was very fast-paced and the incredible plot kept me going late into the night.
I think that the low numbers for the XBox are justified, however. I tried it on the XBox before it was released on the PC and I couldn't believe how choppy and just plain chunky it was. It is a gorgeous game with amazing sound, but I think that the XBox release should have been held back for the XBox 360. I don't like the control scheme with the XBox controller, it drove me nuts!
On the PC it looks, sounds, and plays wonderfully. The graphics are amazing, the sound is phenomenal, and the game play is extremely smooth. The control scheme Gliphyx came up with for Advent Rising is made for the mouse/keboard combination of the PC.
Basically, I really enjoyed the game, and I found that the action and dialogue was much better than your average computer game. I just wouldn't recommend getting it on the XBox.

I just got this last night. The lady at the store said it's a "sleeper", meaning it didn't come out with a lot of splash but it seems to be gradually building a following.

I don't know about that; the biggest following I've seen is maybe 20-30 people at both the now-defunct official AR board and the board of the company made by the Mustard Brothers, who made AR. Their website, FWIW, is www.chairentertainment.com
I still can't believe how badly it sold. But then again, Gamespot, which is one of the most influential review sites, panned it unfairly. They accused it of cloning Halo with the aliens (Halo's aliens are nothing alike), copying the plots of Titan A.E., Star Wars, and Halo, said the plot wasn't good and was told poorly, said they stole the HUD from Halo, and said even the freaking fonts were stolen from Halo. He then rags on their art design and just about everything else. Oy...

Well, I suppose I can only pity the person who sees Halo and Star Wars as unique seminal opera. I haven't seen Titan A.E. so I can't speak to that.
I thought the Alien design was one of the better aspects so far. Advent Rising certainly doesn't waste time getting on with Card's famous "moral complexity".

I wasn't reminded of Halo at all... The controls were quite a bit different.
It's worth noting that AR wasn't very friendly for those who like the have the left stick as "look" and the right stick as "move". I'm still mad about that a bit, but I got used to playing both ways now, especially since Oblivion came out on 360.
SPOILERS
I did think of Titan A.E. when their planet was destroyed, but it was a different planet, and they were apparently one of many human planets that the Seekers destroyed
/SPOILERS
I think that's a pretty significant plot difference. Titan A.E. did well because of the good animation and effects mostly. I thought the movie itself was kinda bleh...
When will a new AR game be released for 360, if ever? Anybody know anything?

I'm pretty sure future AR games were dependent on the success of the first, which was apparently less than hoped for.

Advent Rising has an INCREDIBLE soundtrack and storyline, I recently got to hear the soundtrack played in the Kennedy Center by a live orchestra... But the game itself was pretty terrible.

I got Advent Rising for Xbox, and I personaly think it to be one of the best games in my collection (which includes some of the more popular games such as Halo, Burnout, Fable, etc.). It's one of the few games I own were I can start playing it at noon and never want to let go of again untill the next morning, where I curl up on the couch, sleep a couple hours and immidiately begin playing again as soon as I become concious. The game was actually on "The Official Xbox Magazine"'s list of "Top 20 Games that Nobody Bought But Should Have". I've never played the computer version, but I would like to.
The only problem I had with it was that in a few spots the graphics seemed to suddenly turn radically amature. But then again, in other areas I am amazed at the beauty or precision of a scene.
There is no book or movie, but I hope that it could be made into one someday. I would definitely buy either one. I heard that it didn't make enough money to make the rest of the trilogy. It makes me sad that such an ingaging story would be ended like that.
So, to Mr. Card I say, Make the next game! I know it may not be in your power to do so, but it would be great to finish this story. And if another game can't be made, then at least write a book, or short story, or something ! Pretty please with cherrys on top??
