This goes against the shark-jumping principle that says that once a series jumps the shark, it cannot come back. Homecoming jumped a couple large sharks, but Crystal City is quite good, one of OSC's 5 or 6 best ever, IMHO.

Maybe, but I think I like Prentice Alvin better than Red Prophet for some reason I can't figure out. Maybe because the story got on track more, Alvin was on the path to being a maker, but then you got him and Peggy proving how good they are with guilt and self denial. I hate that.

Oh man, you said it, sister.
Even worse is how Peggy can't shut up, and can't be happy. I mean, crap, it's like I married her. It's that intense.

I wanted to tell them, it was not your fault. It was the guy who shot her's fault. He was the one who was bad, not you too so STOP WITH THE GUILT ALREADY.
The wrong people being guilty makes me mad.

I love Seventh Son, Red Prophet, and Prentice Alvin, but I don't like the last three books very much. Just like in the last couple books in the Ender series, it seems like his style just got too stretched by the later part of the series.
Although of course the last books in both the Ender and Alvin series had some very good parts, they just weren't good books overall, in my opinion.
But I'm still dying for the seventh Alvin book.......

Crystal City was teh stuff. I admit that Children of the Mind was no "Speaker", but I have high hopes for the sequel to "Children", which Orson personally promised that he would write at the last signing I attended.
He did, actually, but...after years of waiting and waiting for sequels from many of my favorite authors, I'm more realistic. If it gets written, it does. If it's great, it is.

I liked all of the Alvin books, though Journeyman and Heartfire were a bit slow (I'm not into trials). Crystal City was a bit disappointing, I was kind of hoping there was more to it than getting Abe Lincoln interested in law and having a pilgrimmage out of New Orleans. Maybe it was just because I read it right after Hurricane Katrina. Yes, Red Prophet was a great book, and so was Crystal City. I liked Seventh Son, Prentice Alvin, and the others too.
I'm not sure how to categorize them. This is like that thread we had a long time ago in the BFFC section about which Harry Potter book is best.

I need to know how it all turns out. Please go ahead and write the last book already, Mr. Card, sir...

I honestly can't rank the books, because I make a point of never reading one unless I'm reading them all consecutively, and as Mr. Card has often done in my life ever since my youth, I am unable to simply put one down and wait to start the next. In other words, I don't recognize the breaks between the stories-- because I don't stop reading. Seriously. I literally have to think about it before I crack any one of his books, because I know if I do, I'm going to wind up re-reading them all. Ender, Alvin, etc, whatever.
Few other authors do that to me. Donaldson, and Gaiman. George Martin, perhaps.
Love it.
OSC-- please write some more Alvin for us. We love you.
