I just wrote a pretty long letter to OSC and sent it off via email, but wanted to share it with "the community":

Great! I wasn't sure, since the end of Shadow of a Giant was so inclusive... and the other two short stories were... weak... at best.

Tom: just out of curiousity... is this (http://www.hatrack.com/cgi-bin/ubbmain/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=002729;p=0&r=nfx) what you meant?

Because he basically said most of my major points...younger Ender, and then tie-in between the post-Bugger war Bean series and +3000yr Ender series...

Yes, he's let us know about two Ender series books, "Shadows in Flight" which is that tie-in between Bean's clan and Ender's clan post-Children of the Mind, and "Ender in Exile" (working title) about younger Ender meeting the stolen baby.

Welcome to Hatrack, Kyle! (Oh, and I was wondering, which two short stories were you referring to? I assume "Investment Counselor" and something else?)

Kyle,

In your letter you mention (what I call) Bean and the Beanie Babies, and you mentioned Young Ender, but you forgot about New!Peter who is in essence, though not in fact, Ender. If you haven't read the last book in the Ender Series that won't make sense, but it is none the less true.

Of course, the Shadow Series was NOT completely resolved. We don't know Bean's fate. We don't know what he did in his years of space travel. We don't know if he had to stop, as I'm sure he surely did, for supplies and other reasons.

I think there would be many funny moments for the reader, though certainly frustrating moments for Bean as he tried to raise and educate his pack of brilliant and I'm sure precocious kids. True Bean has superior brain power, but he is out numbered.

I also think it is tragic as Bean grows larger and larger even to the point of incapacitation, yet he is still responsible for his kids.

And I consider the lack of Bean's death one of the GREAT unresolved aspects of the series. I need that death so I can finally grieve for Bean, a character who is very real to me.

I also see many great adventures for New!Peter and his wife, and for Jane and Miro. There is the problem of faster than light travel, and it is a problem because they have it and Starways Congress doesn't.

As the thread you referenced shows, Card is planning two books. The first should be out later this year ('Ender in Exile'). That is the story of Ender and Valentine traveling from planet to planet. Even in that space of time, there seem to be many great adventures available. Ender learned to speak Korean. Ender speaks at the death of the founder of 'The Children for the Mind of Christ'. I think his 3,000 year flight only lasted about 12 years or so in real Ender-times. Yet, is seems to have been a very full 12 years.

Ender's story might be done. And, sadly it seems that Bean will be dead at the start of 'Shadows in Flight', but I do sincerely hope that we get an accounting of Bean's death. I simply won't do for him to just be gone. That's not resolution. That's not satisfaction.

In the mean time, if you are interested in more backstory and history and Ender and his parent, read "First Meeting", a series of short stories by Card including the original novella of 'Enders Game'. In it we see Ender's father and his first meeting with the International Fleet. Later we see John Paul Wiggin meet the woman who will become his wife and Ender's mother. We also get the story of Ender's first meeting with the computer program 'Jane'. All very good reads. Excellent stories.

Card is also publishing in book form all the Ender and Ender related stories that were publish on 'The Intergalatic Medicine Show' website. That will certainly be an interesting read and should be available very soon.

'Maps in a Mirror' is also a most excellent collection of short stories by Card, stories that span his entire career. Some of them are very touching.
