Hi Ender772. Welcome to Hatack!

The Lovelock fans will surely say to take some solace in having many more books than they got. [Wink]

Seriously, the usual answer is that he does plan to finish it soon. Which has been the answer for a lot of years. He also has emphasized in no uncertain terms the next book will be the last.

More recently, though, his recent stroke seems to have given him quite a scare. He realized that, had he died, his wife would have had to pay back advances on books he's already received advances on, so he's given those highest priority. Right now, that seems to mean the mithermages books (lost gate, gate thief) and the pathfinder series.

Any new contracts will include a clause that, should he die, Aaron Johnston gets to finish the book from his notes.

If I'm rembering all this right.

Where does Master Alvin fit into This new timetable? I don't know.

But I do remember reading something that said he'd finally figured out an entry point for the last book. He's going to skip ahead further than he had planned to, and the Crystal City will likely be fully built when the story begins. So he is working on the development of it.

That's all I know.

Glad to have you here!

Welcome, Ender772!

I was just replying to your post about The Worthing Saga, and decided to move it over here instead.

My post:

I also really enjoyed The Worthing Saga. It is probably the only book, apart from Ender's Game, that I've read multiple times.
As far as Alvin Maker goes, I'm more bitter about Lovelock. I lent the book to a family member, and now he's also bitter about Lovelock. Lovelock is a deep wound that may never heal. I'm completely at peace with The Alvin Maker series. I'm sure OSC will get around to finishing it at some point, hopefully....maybe....

I've said this in another thread recently, but I think it's worth posting again. I'm actually ok if Master Alvin never gets published. All of the loose ends aren't necessarily tied up neatly at the end of The Crystal City, but all of the characters are at least in relatively "stable" places from a plot standpoint.

I love the Alvin Maker saga (I actually read the Alvin books before any Ender books, so it was my introduction to OSC), and I've spent more time than I'd probably care to admit imagining what might happen after the events of The Crystal City. There are so many possibilities, and so many potential directions for the story to go... I'd almost be disappointed to find out which version of events in my mind are "correct" (if any of them turned out to be). (Note that I said almost. [Smile] )

The stable state of the "Alvin Maker" characters stands in contrast to, for example, the Pathfinder series, which really needs the resolution that is hopefully coming in the final book of that series (which has already been announced!).

The longer a series goes on, the worse it gets. This is an almost universal law of fiction writing. The more EG books there are, the worse they get. I'm fine if Alvin Maker goes no further -- the first four books are the ones worth rereading, anyway.

I thought The Crystal City was better than the fourth one.
