Facebook chat to offer live voice chat

Skype is free when you use it computer to computer, as opposed to using a phone, yes? Either way, I suspect the ubiquitous nature of Facebook will make this an oft used feature for a lot of people.

Vivox sounds even better, though, and it allows for people to use a phone to call into existing comp to comp conversations.

How cool is that? [Big Grin]

I'm still waiting for a service that will let me call a cell phone from my computer for free. I have a friend in Mali and a friend in Senegal, both PCVs, but even with Skype I can't really afford the minutes to call them. I've rediscovered the magic of letter writing though.

My first thought was, "Wow, I'd totally use that!" But then I remembered the numerous times Facebook IM has stuttered and died mid-conversation. Maybe I'm the only one who has trouble with it, but if their Voice chat is as frustrating to work with as their IM-ing, I doubt it would be worth it.

The thing about Facebook chat, and the reason I use it is that it gives you a chance to stay in contact with people you like but aren't close enough to to actively make plans to see them. The kind of people you might not think to ask to the movies, but that you always wind up talking to for at least 15 minutes when you run into them at the grocery store. Facebook is a virtual way to "run into" people you are no longer in close physical proximity to. And chat allows you to say hello when that happens.
