1. At least one brand of shampoo guarantees that "organic experience".
2. Shampoos have multisyllabic words in them.
3. Shampoo is bubbly and smells good.
4. Shampoo doesn't care if you also use conditioner, hot oil, and mousse.
5. Rinse and Repeat, baby!

Being, uh, a man, I guess I'd rather wash my hair. Actually, I don't guess, I'm certain.

Mmmmm, I love having my hair washed by someone else.... Course, that usually only happens at the hair salon. ::sigh::

<--- Would like to have hair washed by some guy. Well, not just some guy. ::reaches for phone:: [Wink] [Razz] [Big Grin]

I don't know any guy that would rather kill himself than wash his hair.

From my observations, washing one's hair significantly improves one's odds in attracting a mate. Few people are interested in the "greasy" look.

Also, I am incapable of understanding a guy that wouldn't happily wash the hair of a woman he was romantically interested in. It has all the guy's favorite things - a woman, nudity, touching, and a very good chance of things getting steamier. I can speak from experience and say that any guy who won't do this is missing out. (Though for those who have never had long hair they may not have good skills at dealing with longer hair.)

I have to wash my hair every day, or it gets very nastily oily. It looks and feels awful. I was shocked a few years back when an African-American girl told me that she only washed her hair once a week and had to use moisturizer then to keep it from drying out. (She was equally startled by my habits.)

That's true. I've noticed that a lot of the personal hygiene differences between various races are completely unknown to most people. Almost as if there's some unwritten taboo to talk about them, but at the same time I've never met someone who seemed adverse to explaining them.

Yet another thing in my long list of "Observations about the Human Race" that I have never found any tangible explanation for.

I would never have thought to ask, except that I was curious about dreadlocks. [Hat] I wanted to know how in the world people found the time to make and unmake so many little braids every day.

I talked to a girl from Jamaica the other day who had beautiful, tiny dreadlocks all the way to her waist. I told her it was beautiful and asked how long it takes her to do it. Twelve hours, she said! Apparently she did it on Thanksgiving Day. I guess it saves her at least a week's worth of washing and brushing her hair, though.

I call little braids 'cornrows' although I may be wrong. Dreads/dreadlocks are definately not braids, they are what look like three-hundred year old braids. They don't come out, you have to cut your hair.

I wash my hair every two or three days and people are always shocked when they hear. I just don't need to wash it every day!

I had been told that the tiny braid things were dreadlocks, but it's entirely possible that I heard wrong.

Dredlocks (aka dreadlocks) are not the same thing as cornrows.

cornrows are different from dred-style braids, I think. Cornrows are against the head (kinda like a french braid) and dred-style braids are only attached to the head where the braid starts.

I love cornrows.

Of course, as a fair haired white chick, I can never have them. And I'd look silly [Smile]

But I love cornrows anyway.

I have to wash my hair every day. If I don't, my scalp gets itchy and I feel icky. Then again, I have short hair, so it takes about one minute to wash my hair. [Smile]

Twelve hours?! That seems like an awful lot of time to spend just on your hair to me... though I suppose you could always have movie marathon or something similar at the same time. [Dont Know]

I shower every other day. Lucky for me, I didn't inherit my mum's oily skin or tendency to sweat all the time so I stay pretty clean and can go showerless for 4 days without feeling icky if I have to. I just like that fresh-out-of-the-shower feeling so I go in between - there's no way I'm showering every day if I don't need to but there's also no way that I'm going more than two or three days without a shower under normal conditions. I have to confess, though, I'm a little indulgent when I do shower time-wise (about 30 to 40 minutes depending... steaming-hot water and bubbles = NICE!) so it's probably best for my family's sanity and the water bills that I don't shower every day. Dreadlocks are called "locks" because the matting procedure "locks" the hair into place. It's separate sections of hair matted into thick or fine twisted strands. Often people use beeswax, or, what looks to be a favorite: Knotty Boy wax

quote:
I hate to tell you this: you can start dreads from braids, BUT they will always kind of look like braids. Now if you don't mind that, then by all means go for it. But people braid their hair and leave it, expecting that one day they will have nice fat Marley locks - but that rarely is the case. Your dread braids will always look very thin and kinky like braids, but it is a cool look. Totally up to you, but I'm just warning you that they won't be the heavy fat dreads that most people are familiar with. And ... washing your scalp will not prevent the development of dreads and in many cases will help the process along by drying the hair out so it's not so greasy and more tangley.
Cornrows are flat to the scalp (tiny French braids) as mentioned above. Lots of skinny braid that swing free are extensions, or just braids. They can serve as the basis for matting up and becoming dreads, but they don't have to (see Knotty Boy excerpt above).

Dreads are tighter and healthier when washed. Knotty Boy has good products.

*one white girl's impression of the hairstyle, status post researching it pretty extensively.

(Yes, I strongly considered dreads, and I still do sometimes. I like hers and hers. Also hers!)

CT, I don't know what kind of pictures you linked to, but every one of them was blocked for me. [Razz]

I like the look of braids, and wanted to get some, but the hairdresser in Detroit talked me out of it. It costs around $150 - $300 for a good set, and with my white girl hair, they'd fall out in less than a week. Not worth it. [Frown]

CT could you be a doctor and wear dreds? I mean I don't actually think they are, but wouldn't the matted look freak your patients out as being unsanitary?

AJ<- has considered both dreds and braids too.

The skinny ones in an up-do (like in some of the pics CT linked to in another thread) look very stylish and professional. I've seen people wear them and never thought twice about any sanitary issues.

Well I've known my share of pot smoking rasta wanna-bes in CA and their wide dreds looked pretty grungy. The funniest thing to see was them shaving their heads when they had to get drug tested for employment. One day dreds from hell, then bam the next day they looked like they were ready for boot camp!

I read somewhere that it was a testament to the durability of our skin that it could tolerate daily exposure to soap. Essentially, the article was about how harmful the average bar of soap was to human skin, and it advised against daily use except for cases where it was especially needed.

Personally, I don't shower on any particular schedule, I just use my hair and nose as a guide. Whenever my hair starts getting oily or I can smell myself (I have a better sense of smell than anyone else I know) I take a shower. I've got pretty long hair, especially for a guy, so it gets oily pretty quickly - probably because I'm constantly messing with it with my hands.

Letting your hygeine go can be bad for your health, but likewise being obsessive about it has harmful effects. If you live in a particularly warm climate showering more often is advisable if you don't want to offend others, but in more temperate climates I personally think (and many medical journals agree) that it's healthier not to shower daily.

Basically, it's dependant upon your body chemistry. If people don't recoil in horror at your appearance/stench, who's to say you shower too infrequently?
