Ooh, finally a quiz I can do well on!

10/10 -- confirmation that I am a grammar geek. [Big Grin]

[Eek!]
The answers had an incorrect statement!
quote:
remember that affect is only used as a verb
Not true! Affect is also a noun -- a very different noun, unrelated (I think) to effect -- but a noun nonetheless.

I've heard (and used) affect as a noun, but only in the context of music. It's related to the doctrine of affects, a baroque concept in which certain musical characteristics (particularly keys) are associated with certain emotions. So, affect in relation to music means "emotional meaning"--not entirely unrelated to effect, but still not the same.

Also, I could be completely off here, but I think it also can be used to indicate affected behavior--as in, behavior that's an act. For example:

Her horror was nothing but affect.

Is this even close to right, or am I just making stuff up?

If you got 10/10 on this quiz, thank your seventh grade teacher.

Thanks, Mrs. Ball.

9/10, but only because I wiffled on the bad/badly thing, and didn't go with my first answer.

Blast.

But hey, at least now I've learned that rule!

[Hat] to those of you who scored 10!

The only one I missed was the affect/effect one I simply try to avoid using either word in a written sentence so I don't have to deal with the problem. I always second guess myself and change it to the wrong one.

I affect an attitude of not caring about the effect it has on others when I try to affect their awareness of their poor grammar. In effect, I effect no small amount of indignation but I pretend that it doesn't affect me.

10/10. Hard to believe, isn't it, considering how many errors make it in to my posts.

She tried to affect an air of nonchalance, as though his words had not affected her. But she was unable to hide her true affect. So much for her affectation.
