So, beyond crap that will blow other crap up better, anyone know of anything cool the US is working on so I can feel better about my country? Or is the US doomed to become a provincial backwater in another 50 years because we concentrated our research on the perfect ranch dressing?

Big deal. We have all those three beat.

1) Rabbit/Human Hybrid Clone--big deal. We have a cross between a Human and an Ostrich. We call it either a Politician or Middle Management. You can find grown samples of these creatures in many places. Ostriches instictivly cover their heads when danger approaches. These creatuse, who's DNA was a bit backwards, instinctively cover thier backsides at any provocation. To facilitate this survival behavior they automatically, and continously, spew enough manure that covering themselves is easy.

2) Robots with the brains of a 5 year old? We have them. They are called Congressmen.

3) Nuclear Plants on the mountains of Mars? After the fun of Chernobyl, do you think anyone is going to let the Russians build a nuclear plant anywhere closer?

The US is suggesting that all countries take up the Russian plan. In fact, we are willing to help Iran and North Korea by blowing their nuclear reactors half way to Mars.

By the time the Russians get a nuclear plant running on Mars, the US will have a fleet of ships able to cross the solar system--and wipe it out since the @#$@# martians will not doubt be building WMD.

Umm... if you just look at a few of the Universities out there you will see some research that is governement sponsored. The US have scientists working on a cloned horse much like the one that was in the news recently.

My area of research is Machine Learning/Robotics. I know that NASA is working on a Robonaut
http://robonaut.jsc.nasa.gov/

Also, just because DARPA (Department of Defense) is funding something does not mean it will only have military applications. After all look at the most famous example, the internet.

Here's a link to DARPA [url] http://www.darpa.mil/ [/url]

One of their other projects is a race of autonomous ground vehicles from the vicinity of Los Angeles to Las Vegas in 2004.

For a list of programs:

You might also look at the National Institute of Health. http://www.nih.gov/

Quantum computers beat the hell out of that crap. US and British reasearchers (and many others I'm sure) are hot on the trail.

What is up WDFH?

I'm still banking on Mr. Fusion:

http://www.usafa.af.mil/dfp/cockpit-phys/ne3ex2.htm

I am hoping that Fuel Cell technology reaches the residential market and becomes cost effective. That to me, is much more practical than childish robots or reactors on Mars.

Alucard, you won't be saying that when the Japanese kick our ass with their hordes of robot slaves.

Or the Chinese invade with their manimals.

Or the Russians ally themselves with the Martians.

Stupid imperialist running dog! Your days are numbered!

As I sit with robot slaves serving me bowls of rice and shots of Vodka, I will reminisce about Earth as I lounge in my Martian Astroliner to my chalet in some nice martian mountain range, all powered by a Russian nuclear reactor.

Dude, I am a survivor.

I might even have a Mr Fusion on board, if I am lucky!

P.S. I am stupid! [Smile]
P.P.S. What's wrong with Imperialism? [Dont Know]
P.P.P.S. I do resemble a dog in many different ways! [ROFL]
P.P.P.P.S. At this rate, my days are SEVERELY numbered. My first wake-up call will be my first heart attack, which I am having trouble predicting. But it is not a question of if, but when. [Angst]

The power plant should be up and running by 2030.
Now this is what bothers me. What exactly is on Mars that requires a nuclear power plant?

Um... Ralphie? Would you know the name of that source? I've been joking about chickapedes with my friends for a while, and we're not sure where that image came from... I think it was something concerning Kentucky Fried Chicken, but I'm not sure.

[Confused]

There is the whole manufacturing of spider silk that we're working on. That's pretty cool.

I just wonder the name of the place on the opposite side of Mars from the power plant is. Just so we can properly rename China syndrome.

Also we have to make sure that Homer simpson is not their safety inspector.

Okay, I've thought of another highly important invention.

Or advancement in biomimetics. Or bio-engineering. Or whatever this would be.

I've decided the Guinea worm and a bag of cheetos absolutely must be crossed. That way, when the Guinea Cheeto is looking for an escape from my body, it can simply go through my tongue and end up in my mouth. I wouldn't have to open a bag, I wouldn't even have to expend the energy it takes to move my arm from the bag to my mouth. And no more Cheeto-hands. Just cheezy, crunchy Cheetos finding their way into my mouth as God intended.

But I'm only the entrepeneur. Someone is going to have to implement this idea. When you do, please get back to me at your earliest convenience.

(Also - parasites suck nutrients: GuineaCheeto possible weight-loss plan? Must look into further)

Heh. Your post reminds me of the episode of The Simpsons where Homer puts himself in a nursing home. [Smile]
