Actually, I believe Anaximander said it was Strife that caused separation in nature, and Love that caused attraction amongst things. Of course, Mr. Greeky-poo's been dead for nigh on 2500 years now, so what does he know anyway! -Bok EDIT: Dang, it was Empedocles. [ September 11, 2003, 04:43 PM: Message edited by: Bokonon ]

Phew. I was going to have to give up on Hatrack permanently if no one recognized it. And she turned to me and took me by the hand And said "I've lost control again"

I have it at home, but I'm downloading it right now to listen to at work... I haven't listened to it for a while. Thanks...

So wait, this wasn't a thread analyzing the philosophy of a presocratic thinker? Darn. * Scampers off to put his book on Parmenides away * -Bok

I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand... I've got the spirit, but lose the feeling.

Nope. A little-known portion of _The Supersensual Life_ by Jakob Boehme. The Wampanoag belief is: I choose the spirit, then comes the feeling.

Zal: Ah, you may be right on that... But upon further research, I think your second sentence in the previous post was actually a reflection of the fellowship of The Righteous Brothers, ca. 1965. -Bok

Bok- You are absolutely correct. But I should also add that the Rightous Brothers are notorious plagiarists -- not only from the American blues tradition (I mean what rock'n'roll artist didn't steal from the blues), but, for example, they lifted the lyrics "In the dark, in the sun/ Like the tide at its ebb / I'm at peace in the web of your arms" directly from a 17th century Dobrogean "doina" (a type of Romanina folk song). My guess is that they were exposed to the source material [a book of doine compiled in 1804 by Fratele (Brother) Nicu Grigorescu] by their friend, the great Moldovan klezmer musician Irwin Barras. I'm not saying that it's not right to borrow from traditional sources, but I do object to the way the rest of the lyrics were changed to oversentmentalize the song -- erasing the stark resignation of the original lyric.

Bok- Good. Concur. Capitulate. It's all the same to me. NOTE: I do bow to your knowledge of the Greeks. <----unschooled in the classics. And: I'm not sure why the angst smiley, but it's entirely appropriate for a thread on Joy Division. ------ q -- Don't turn away, in silence.

My favorite Insane Clown Posse lyrics: "O, what care you, fair face of clay, If it be he or I? Still earth shall only earth remain, Let luck its course unfold, And I in my own kingdom reign Immutable and cold."
