I'm reading The City, Not Long After, which I picked up on a whim at the library the other day. I had a vague idea that Murphy was a capable author, but I couldn't remember whether I'd read anything by her or not. If this novel is any indication, she's pretty damned good. It's easily the most unusual post-apocalyptic novel I've come across, and the only one that would fall into the "magical realism" category. I'm only about half way through, but so far I'm loving all of the characters, including the city of San Francisco, which is a bonafide character in and of itself. Very interesting book. I'm going to go off and do a Google search on her here in a minute, but if anybody else has any favorite titles of hers, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Murphy's website appears to be www.brazenhussies.net. I was a little nervous about clicking on that one from work, but the firewall didn't block me. If I get fired you'll all know why.

I signed up for the newsletter at Murphy's site, asking a few questions at the same time, and got an interesting email back from her pretty quickly. Seems like a nice person in addition to being a good author.

Wow, a quick personal response from an author. Cool! Didn't she write a short story in the Mirrorshades sf anthology?

I don't know; maybe. I know that she's had a number of stories in Dozois' Year's Best anthologies.

You know, it's funny. Authors are the only celebrities I get excited about. I mean, if I'd gotten an email from a well known actor or director or something, that'd be okay, but I get really excited when I get something from an author I respect. I had a multiple email exchange with Maureen McHugh years ago, not long after CMZ came out, and I still find that cool.
