In light of the recent thread, and the new Napster vs. iTunes vs. PressPlay, etc . . .

Those of you who download legally, what's your preferred site? Do you get mp3s or some other format? How much is it?

I'm still of the "buy a CD and rip it" crowd, mostly because I don't much like the service of both the new Napster and iTunesMusicStore.

However, I do recommend all of them as alternatives to the Kazaa-using people who come to me for help with all the stupid viruses they (deservedly) got from using p2p services.

I'm a big fan of iTunes. I would be a bigger fan of iTunes if Dave Matthews would get his butt over there.

If you like live music, try www.etree.org

They deal in SHn, which is a different format that you need to convert to a regular audio cd. You can play them on your computer only. The site has tons of directions, and software downloads that you need.

The site is all legal stuff, from bands that allow taping. Good, good stuff on there, like Donna the Buffalo. Ahem. And many other bands you might not have heard of, but which are awesome.
Dave Matthews, Phish, all the "jam bands," all the Grateful Dead variations.

Here is the list of bands. They get more every week, it seems. You do need high speed internet.

I heard that if you broke for the 40 gig Ipod and got all your songs off of Itunes, it would cost you 40 thousand dollars. That's doing it legally.

I remember reading something about Napster and I'm a little fuzzy on the details so please forgive me. I think they have two different options: Option one is about some small amount per song. Option two is a certain monthly fee and unlimited downloads. If I could cover the monthly fee, I'd definetely go for option two, but even then, I don't know if I'd use it enough to really make it worth my while. I'm bad with new bands/songs anyway, so I usually frustrate myself on Kazaa trying to look up a song that I only know the chorus to. Which, by the way, is why I do Kazaa in the first place. I want to listen to a song a few times when I feel like it (not just whenever it goes on the radio) before I commit to a cd.

P.S.--right now I don't use any P2P service, so it's a bit moot.

I find legal music really boring. I mean, how many rhymes are there for tort, contract, and liability? Although I do have a couple of favorite tunes from this genre:

Notarize my heart by Feeding Frenzy.

and

Get off my case by Trial and Error.

I think Bob is my favorite legal music source.
