Ok, they're in a week from tomorrow. Who's going to be at either (or both) of these, besides me?

PASADENA/LOS ANGELES, CA—November 11th

Unable to confirm at this point -- Mama Squirrel's fault. [Smile] Hope to make it to one of them, though.

Oh that's nice -- blame the host. C'mon, it's the parasite's fault, neh? [Wink]

Blame it on Mooselet II. [Big Grin]

We can't blame it on our second son. And you definitely can't blame it all an me. You had something to do with the timing of this pregnancy, remember? [Wink]

Didn't the publishers make Scott's schedule? We can blame them.

Docmagik said he was gonna try to make Pasadena, and I think saxon75 mentioned trying for that one, too. Lalo was at the last one -- maybe he'll go again, as well.

I usually work until 7 on Tuesdays, and I don't have any extra time off. But maybe if I get there early and then work some extra hours on Wednesday and Thursday... Well, no promises, but I'll see what I can do.

Y'all were missed. [Frown]

But I did meet a genuine Lurker while standing in line. [Big Grin] She and her husband even smuggled me in -- the bookstore was requiring purchase of the book. [Razz]

[Wave] Nancy and Michael

It's been a long time since I was at a book signing. I forgot how much fun it is to meet people in line. [Smile] I also got to discuss Israeli naming patterns with Scott. And Kristine is every bit as wonderful as I expected. [Hat]

Actually, San Diego was yesterday.

Yeah. [Razz] I even tried arguing (yeah, I know, there's a shocker [Big Grin] ) -- saying that's not the author's policy. But was told, that it is the store's policy. I was trying to decide what to do -- if I was willing to make a big issue of it. But my good friends (of 45 minutes [Wink] ) agreed that of course I was "with them." But there was some grumbling from other people in line about the purchase requirement -- which, mind, HAD to be Crystal City.

There's a REASON I've almost never bought a book in that store, even though it's about 15 feet from my favorite local movie theater. Attitude. [Wall Bash]

We need to let OSC know about this. He'll make sure there's never a signing there again. It happened at least once in the past, and he stayed outside the store and signed books for everyone.

<Still bummed he couldn't go today.>

I know, Pop, that's why I considered making an issue of it -- I knew I had a leg to stand on. [Wink]

But making an issue once I had gotten in seemed rather ungracious. The bookstore employee I had argued with in line was already eying me (she was, thank goodness, NOT the one at the door). And I was having a nice chat. Tact and timing are high on my list of skills-I'm-doing-my-best-to-develop. [Big Grin]

I figured I'd wait till this batch of signings was done with to bring it to the Cards' attention.

Yeah, that's a good idea, and they could come back and do one in that store's parking lot for anyone who doesn't buy a book there.

And then I could go.

Oooh, there's a thought! [Big Grin]

In the parking lot should be a good trick though. This bookstore is in a large shopping center. OTOH, there is a lovely outdoor eating area -- shared by the half-dozen eateries adjacent -- a few feet away. [Smile]

Rivka, is this Vroman's you're talking about? It seems pretty out-of-character, from my experiences. But it fits your description pretty well thus far -- fifteen feet from a theater, in a shopping center, near eateries, etc.

It'd be a shame if OSC were to stop signing there -- if only because I believe the store's a good one, and deserves the boost. But definitely call in and find out what goober made a purchase mandatory; that wasn't the policy at the last signing, and I really want to believe this requirement was the result of some jackass employee, rather than actual change in store policy.

<sniffs the air, glances about nervously, sees a few familiar faces and decides it's okay to go ahead and post> [Big Grin]

I'm back. We got to the signing just after the Q and A had started (45 minutes in traffic for ten miles, grrrr.
The QandA went on for quite awhile, I think the only thing I missed was the movie info at the top, which others have already recapped on pweb. Other info from the q and a

Card is currently working on Rachel and Leah, he hopes to have it finished by the end of this month, though that could change--depends on how much he gets written on his laptop while driving to the various cities on the tour.

Slow Leak will be his next project, which is in various stages of completion (sounded as though he had several stories in the universe written) and he mentioned hoping to have it finished by next January, I'm not sure if that's 04 or 05 though. Slow Leak sounds like a GREAT project, and Card gave a more detailed description of the concept (not a lot but just enough to tantalize)--his enthusiasm for the project got me quite excited for it.

He really enjoys writing the Alvin books and the next one will definitely be the final volume.

Rasputin is very nearly officially dead. No change in status from Endercon and he said both he and Kathleen are kinda unhappy with it and may just scrap what they have and start over again.

Card wants to write more Pastwatch novels but the original novel became more about the time travelers than Columbus, which he never intended and, in his own words "I can't have them go change history again" so the ideas for the Flood and Eden are mainly just interesting ideas with a lot of work yet to be done to bring them to story level.

He's possibly interested in writing more books in the vein of the Women of Genesis series. Possibly about the Christian martyrs because "I've always wanted to kill someone with a hundred arrows". These would absolutely not be hagiographies though.

He's written something along the lines of eight screenplays, but can only get meetings in Hollywood when he's there to talk science fiction, if it's a romantic comedy ala "Feed the Baby of Love" (to which I say cast Janis Ian, have her score it ala the Graduate. Market heavily in the midwest and watch the money flow in) he can't get anyone interested.

They're working on developing a young adults series of books set in battle school PRE ENDER focusing on kids that could have been 'the one'--Pinual anyone? These would be written by other authors and approved by Card

Ender's Game will be made into a movie regardless of whether or not Troy is a success. Warners is committed to making it and putting the money into it. If Peterson's epic is a massive flop then they may look elsewhere for a director, but the movie WILL be made.

If Ender's Game is a massive success then the studios will exercise their option and make more movies about kids in space (which is what they think makes the book so successful). If OSC is ridiculously lucky they'll choose Shadow of the Hegemon to make a sequel out of, but that's not the way the system works and possibilities are essentially nil.

OSC thinks that all they need to have a 40 million opening weekend is a thirty second trailer that shows a good Ender who looks the part, with at least one scene that shows he's not a Culkin and a great looking battleroom and everyone whos read the book in the last 18 years will be there the first weekend (and dragging along friends in my opinion). He also warned us not to go if they don't show the battleroom in the trailers because that probably means it's no good. [Wink] [Big Grin] [Wink]

I think that about covers the info dispensed, the other tidbits can be found in his reviews everything columns, or is nothing new.

I also met many cool people. Got to talk to docmagik in person (great guy!), and a guy with a hardcover collection that put IdemosthenesI to shame (he'd just bought a first edition Ender's Game for $1200). Several very cool high school and jr high kids I talked to and pointed to Pweb

I went to the Vroman's signing last Tuesday. My cousin and I were one of the first people there, and was among the first five in the line as well. If you're curious, it's probably not too hard to distinguish us. If you saw a pair of fourteen-sixteen-ish chinese girls (There wasn't a lot of young people, uh, nor Asian people at that), one taller with a bun (that's me) and the other with strait hair, they are probably us.

Anyways, the signing was great. As usual, I bombed my meeting with Mr. Card but it was still fun experience. I was hoping to take a picture with him but in the end I chickened out. I ended up taking a picture with a giant binder at a nearby Office Max instead- [Mad]

Last time at Vroman's, I saw a couple of Hatrackers I recognized. This year unfortunately, I guess no one went.
