First post is my last post. [Grumble]

Let those Provo-ites talk about their fuzzy, pink Jesuses.

I prefer a more balanced crowd.

I was wanting to explore Jesus' treatment of one of our Book of Mormon characters. And it came across as though I was asserting that Jesus was a harsh taskmaster.

It was in the "Doctrines & Scholarship" forum. I had a run-in with the official troll-greeter.

Okay, my wife and I were reading 3-Nephi last night, and I got a bit agitated when Christ asks Nephi to bring his records, and then Christ wants to know why Nephi hasn't included an account of the fulfillment of Samuel's prophecy: that the graves would be opened and many saints would appear unto many.

We've read that passage many times, but with this reading came the realization that poor Nephi hasn't had any sleep for about five days because of disasters and darkness and Jesus being there. And it's amazing that he had any record at all of his disaster observations to present to Jesus.

I wanted to know the tone of Jesus' voice when he asked for the records and asked why an account of the graves being opened was left out.

I got a good answer too. But then the troll-patrol came out and challenged my motives.

Oh. I just don't go in there much... I'm sorry. We've had a big problem with trolls lately, and some of the members, especially newer ones, are bash-happy, even though everyone has been thoroughly chewed out for it. [Frown]

Actually, Jesus doesn't show up for almost a year so it's not the case that Nephi was necessarily as frazzled as you are implying. Common mistake.

It's kind of a common assumption that a bit of time had passed since the big storm. Long enough, I guess, for the survivors to have been able to record what happened and to have forgotten to write about the people rising from their graves.

see 3 Nephi 8:1-5 and 3 Nephi 10:18.

Also, the recordkeeper gets heaps o' praise there at the start of chapter 8. If that helps you feel any better, skillery.

Yeah, Pooka's right.

Chapter 8:
quote:
5 And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, in the first month, on the fourth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such an one as never had been known in all the land.

Chapter 10:

quote:
18 And it came to pass that in the ending of the thirty and fourth year, behold, I will show unto you that the people of Nephi who were spared, and also those who had been called Lamanites, who had been spared, did have great favors shown unto them, and great blessings poured out upon their heads, insomuch that soon after the ascension of Christ into heaven he did truly manifest himself unto them—

It was Frieburg's painting of this scene in chapter 11 that threw me off: "AND now it came to pass that there were a great multitude gathered together, of the people of Nephi, round about the temple which was in the land Bountiful; and they were marveling and wondering one with another, and were showing one to another the great and marvelous change which had taken place."

Frieburg has dead bodies and broken buildings laying around, like the disaster just happened.

I figure discussing the topic here is ok, but questioning the actions of the Nauvoo mod/admin (assuming that's who you mean by troll-greeter, and in that case I'd question using that terminology, too) here is kinda less couth. Dontcha think maybe?

Interesting. I learned something new today. [Smile] I guess I tend to forget that just because the chapters are next to each other, it doesn't mean the things happened in quick succession.

Specifics...

quote:
3 Nephi 8:5
And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, in the first month, on the fourth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such an one as never had been known in all the land.

quote:
3 Nephi 10: 18
And it came to pass that in the ending of the thirty and fourth year, behold, I will show unto you that the people of Nephi who were spared, and also those who ahd been called Lamanites, who had been spared, did have great favors shown unto them, and great blessings poured out upon their heads, insomuch that soon after the ascension of Christ into heaven, he did truly manifest himself unto them.

Basically, that means it happened within a year after the storm. It does not give a specific time for Christ's visit, rather, Mormon states that there were blessings poured out on the survivors by the end of the 34th year.

Okay, so I should start looking up stuff at the church website and doing a Copy/Paste...I'm slow. Go away.

I don't know if a mod was involved. I was confronted by an old-timer, non-mod, whose attack on a personal level took my thread out of bounds, and probably brought the mod's attention.

When I got home I found picture number 315, "Christ Appears to the Nephites" in the Gospel Art kit.

The explanation on the back says:

quote:
...These storms changed the whole face of the land, and the land where the Nephites lived was covered with darkness for three days. After the storms and darkness ended, many Nephites gathered about the temple in the land Bountiful. They were looking at the great changes that had taken place and were talking about Jesus Christ and the signs of his death.

Suddenly they heard a voice out of heaven, but they could not understand what it said. It was not a harsh voice nor a loud voice, but it was a small voice...

The third time they heard the voice they understood it. The voice said, "Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I am well pleased..."

The Nephites looked up and saw a Man clothed in a white robe descending out of heaven.

So even the Church curriculum department has Christ's appearance happening on the heels of the destruction, rather than toward the end of that same year as recorded by Nephi. No wonder I was confused.

It doesn't say how long, though. Just "after." a year later is still after. Scriptures can be vague like that. Unfortunately, I think people are jumping the gun by assuming it was exactly a year later. Just as a matter of guess work, I think that it happened after his return to Jerusalem. I think there was a period of like 40 days (I can't remember exactly) from the time that he first appeared to the apostles there and his final ascension. I'm thinking it's after, because he mentions his return to the people of Jerusalem in his discourse with the Nephites/Lamanites. So my guess at actual time frame is anywhere between 2 months after the storm and one year after.
