Acording to the ticker at the bottom of the screen on FOXNews, Peter Jackson said he would do the Hobbit, the deal is still being worked out because of copywrite issues. Glee!

yes, he said hes going to work on king kong as soon as he is done finishing the return of the king extended edition. Once that is done, hes going to to king kong, which he said most scenes would be shot in the studios. This is the first serious thing ive heard of him saying he would do the hobbit.

King Kong has been in pre-production for about a year now. Naturally, Weta is doing the effects and cgi. The script is still being written, but Phillipa Boyens (I'm pretty sure it was her) said that we will see Kong climbing the Empire State Building. Peter Jackson is hoping to get Naomi Watts for the Fay Wray part. Ian McKellen may also have a role. It is set to come out in December of 2005.
This is surprising news about The Hobbit because Jackson has said before that he would never direct it because he would want to be able to go and see it (as an audience member with no part in the production).

Don't think Ian Holm will do it, he said that the parts where he taped his face back to look younger were the worst. Maybe with CGI? But it sounds more likely that they'd just get someone newer.

It would be sad to see someone else as Bilbo because Ian Holm pulled it off so perfectly. That's the problem with prequels, I guess. You have to make everyone look younger. At least Gandalf won't be a problem.
Now, how do I go about getting myself a part as Background Elf #19?

1. According to imdb, Ian Holm is still alive. 2. Forgive me if I'm confused as I have not yet read The Hobbit, but at the time of Bilbo's 111th birthday, he didn't look a day older than when he found the ring. How much time passes during the course of The Hobbit? Would they really have to make him look that much younger than he looked at the beginning of FotR?
Please set me straight if necessary.

Gandalf said Bilbo didn't look a day older, but it seems more a courtesy than actual truth. Bilbo has aged, albeit slowly, from back then, as evident by the flashback to his discovery of the ring -- he looked far younger then.
I'd much prefer the LotR Bilbo for The Hobbit, but to be honest, I didn't think he could do it -- I've heard rumors of his death. Glad to hear I could have heard the news from a bad source.

Even though he was supposed to look about the same age at the time of LOTR, Weta did have to tape back Holm's skin for the brief shot of young Bilbo, which apparently is ridiculously uncomfortable. Actually, I wouldn't care if he looked old. Throw a brown wig on him and suspend your disbelief, I say.

Ok, so that begs the question, "Are they @#$%ing insane?" Peter answered that by saying that New Line is very keen on wanting to do THE HOBBIT, but there are LEGAL ENTANGLEMENTS that are keeping it from happening. You see... NEW LINE has the rights to make a Movie from the book THE HOBBIT. However, UNITED ARTISTS/MGM apparently have the rights to distribute that movie. SO - why would New Line make Peter Jackson an offer to make a movie that they could not distribute. And why would MGM/UA make an offer to Jackson to distribute a movie they can not make? LIKE "SPIDER-MAN" and the rights issues that kept that in the hands of lawyers for two decades, this is the problem going on with THE HOBBIT.
So, as long as the power of the ring motivates each studio to not cooperate and work the deal out to each others' mutual satisfaction, Jackson can... "WANT" to make the film all he wants, the fact is... beauracracy could keep it from every come to fruition. So, let's hope things work out, I want to see Weta's SMAUG so bad... the burning of Lake Town... The butterflies above the trees... Riddles in the dark.... the Woodland Elves... Barrell riding! And that final war over Smaug's Gold. "I likes mine, RAAAAW!" One day, perhaps!

Regarding casting: I personally think Ian Holm would be a ridiculous choice for Bilbo. Yes, he played the role perfectly in the LOTR, but that was because Bilbo was 111 years old. Getting old guys to play younger roles just because they have the acting chops to do it doesn't work in films. No amount of "makeup magic" can successfully make an old person look younger without diminishing the range of facial and body expressions necessary to be convincing. Plus, there are alrady plenty of good choices for Bilbo's role.

Bilbo was 50 in The Hobbit. Ian Holm might be a bit old, especially if they wait a few more years to make the film. Obviously McKellan could play Gandalf again as long as they don't wait 10 years or more to make it.
Do you think Rys-Davies would play the younger Gloin? Andy Serkis as Gollum again? Maybe Bloom as Thanduril? Vigo as the guy from Laketown?

Only Andy Serkis should do Gollum. He did as much to create the character as all the special effects people put together.
Someone younger should be found to play Bilbo in The Hobbit. It would be good if they found someone who resembled Ian Holm, at least a little.
Why would Peter Jackson want to waste his talents on yet another remake of King Kong? That is only a two-act play, one set in the jungle, and one set in New York City.
I would rather see Peter Jackson rescue the Jurassic Park franchise from the disasterously bad third movie, where they threw away the script and were writing a new script while they were shooting, and did a terrible job with plot holes and loose threads all over the place. Let Peter Jackson do Jurassic Park IV, and tell the real story that has been waiting to be told, of dinosaurs on the mainland in Central America, hinted at in the first book. Take the scripting out of the hands of the barbarians and give it back to Michael Crichton, and let him write a decent story for part IV. It's his baby, after all.

I agree. The only actor playing Gollum should be Andy Serkis. In fact, Mr. Serkis deserves an Oscar for his absolutely wonderful, beleivable performance as the tragic wretch of human in whom only glimpses of humanity survive. Of course, that's not going to happen since Oscar voters are stupid.
As far as other returning actors, Ian McKellen is the only one I can think of that would make sense. The other actors could maybe appear in cameo roles to satisfy the fans, but there needs to be a new cast for the principal roles. After all, it is a different movie.
Oh, and I'd definitely plunk down 6 bucks to see a Peter Jackson-directed version of King Kong.

Legolas might do a cameo, so as to satisfy the ladies. But I think of the dwarves who came with Gimli, who you could see in the background, noen of them would make a very good Gloin.

Oh yes...precious, we wants to see Andy again, and the Ians. And cameos for the entire cast. JRD should have a crack at Gloin, and we wants an Extended Edition, precious, yes we do - with Richard Taylor describing in that que-card-reading rhythm of his how they built Lake Town to a 1:1 scale and then burned it down in segments.
I have the feeling that when the credits roll on ROTK, I'm going to feel exactly the same way I did when I finished the books the first time - I won't want to leave.

Actually, Lime, Return of the King (the movie) wraps up neatly enough that you feel the story is complete. Yeah, you want to spend the rest of your life in Hobbiton (maybe figure out how to inherit Bag End), but for the Fellowship it's a well-made ending.

John Rhys Davies apparently suffered horribly during LOTR, having become allergic to the prosthesis glue a few weeks in. So I bet we could count him out.
Bilbo: Jake Lloyd or Joel Haley Osment?
Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, the reason Sean Astin and Elijah Wood worked as Hobbits is because they have those weird proportioned faces that so many child actors have. Though on that score, JHO is much more likely since Jake Lloyd was cast to look like a younger DiCaprio. That is, Lloyd looked more like a child and less like a short adult.
