In the past these have seemed to be Oscar's totally fun, but not as respected little brother. (The People's Choice awards are like Oscar's irritating cousin that they don't like to talk about.) I haven't seen a lot of the movies with the nominations, but some of them seem like they're just a matter of course. "Oh, if Nicole Kidman acted in a drama, she HAS to get a nomination." I guess it's probably not like that (and I really like Nicole Kidman), but I'm just baffled at how the media already guesses, quite accurately actually, who might get nominated and win. I wonder if the academies and award boards actually LISTEN to the media. (saints preserve us.)

Anyway, this is pointless, I was just thinking about it...and how no one in RoTK got nominated for any of the acting awards. *Sigh* I guess it was to be expected. Maybe we'll see Peter Jackson get a best director. [Smile]

Man, I love award shows! My friends think I'm weird. But I can't help but get excited every year for the Golden Globes and the Oscars. I'm so excited that Johnny Depp got nominated! [Big Grin] Now I absolutely have to watch them. [Smile]

Golden Globes are the Hollywood International Press association, so that would stand to reason. However, it seems the films that get Golden Globes very often do not get Oscars. I guess I would have to look back over it and see. *Oscar is a trademark of the Children's Television Workshop

Yeah, that kind of bugs me. It seems as if the Oscar academy doesn't LIKE the fact that the Goldens Globes might spoil the surprise, and so they choose different winners out of spite, just to keep the audience guessing. Irritating that it could be political games instead of who really deserves the award, isn't it?

I just wanted to point out that not to long ago - not long the way some of us reckon our lifetimes, anyway - the Golden Globes jumped from industry joke to widespread public laughingstock.

In 1982, Pia Zadora, a basically no-talent entertainer with a very rich husband, won a Globe for a film that had been univerally blasted by film critics. The small group that votes on the awards were wined and dined extensively by Zadora's husband.

Here's an article on the Golden Globes with some more info and background:

Truth takes some shine off the Golden Globes.

Excerpt:

quote:
To the millions who buy into the Golden Globes hype, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the outfit behind the much-ballyhooed annual TV and movie prizes, sounds like an august body of distinguished journalists and critics.

For the most part, however, it is a glorified fan club with something like 96 members who pose for pictures with the stars, ask for autographs, revel in the swag and pricey hospitality with which the studios shower them, ask fawning questions and get extremely shy when anyone starts to poke, prod or otherwise inquire about their credentials, qualifications or ethics.
