The Two Towers: Extended Edition - Updated Specs

New Line Cinema will release The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - Extended Edition (What looks to be a disc this good DESERVES the full title) on November 18th in a set that looks to equal the excellent The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition. With over 40 minutes of new footage, , TT:EE will be presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital Surround EX and DTS 6.1 ES audio. The feature is spread over the first two discs with four audio commentaries by director Peter Jackson and the writers, the design team, the production team, and the cast. There is no word on whether everyone who participated in the first extended edition will again participate in this one (although one can assume that Sean Bean will most likely be absent this time around).

The second two discs will feature the special features. You get The Appendices: Adapting the book into a screenplay and planning the film, the design and inspiration for locations in Middle-earth storyboards to pre-visualization, a look at the sculptors in action as they create the weapons, armor, creatures and miniatures from the film, an "Atlas of Middle-Earth," an additional interactive map of New Zealand which highlights the location scouting process, multiple featurettes which include "Sending Actors to Battle" (preparation for sword fighting), "Post-Production" (editing) and "Principal Photography" (stories from the set), a look at the digital effects including motion capture and "Massive" (a program to create the digital armies used in Helm's Deep), additional "Bigatures" (a close-up look at the detailed miniatures used in the film), a sound design demonstration, still galleries of art and slideshows with commentaries by the artists plus additional behind-the-scenes photographs and personal cast photos. Also included are extensive ROM extras to be announced. What looks to be on the best discs on the market will run you $39.95 retail.

For those kids who want to go all out, there will also be a Gift Set featuring all the above goodies plus a Collectible Gollum polystone statue created by Sideshow Weta, "The Evolution of Gollum" exclusive documentary on the Weta Workshop and how the Gollum statue was created, a printed companion piece showing how Gollum evolved from pencil sketch to sculpted maquette to digital character, and collectible packaging. Gollum Goodness costs $69.95 retail.

WOW! Can't wait!

Raise your hand if you get light headed at the idea of the 12 hour DVD marathon when the last extended version DVD comes out?

When all three are out, party at my house. Everyone is invited.

You can have the West Coast one, Slashy.

My basement rec room may be ready by then for the southeastern clan. *crosses fingers*

Think lots of room, a kitchenette right there with refrigerator for cold drinks, microwave for lots of popcorn, big TV with stereo surround sound and lots of seating. And a pool table and darts for those that want to do something besides start at the movie the whole time.

I *love* that the extended version release schedule is timed in such a way that people wanting to get me a last minute birth day present can conveniently get one for me!

I can't wait!

One question though...does anyone understand why we can assume this?

He wasn't in the theater version of the movie? And only has a small part in the flashback section of the extended DVD this time around?

big TV with stereo surround sound
Beware! Get a big TV in a nice basement and you're doomed to host every party in the world. I have the above mentioned combination and I have had to make provisos: If I provide the venue... every time... everyone else brings the FOOD.

Beware!

Of course you may like hosting every party...

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I've been searching and searching all over my TTT:EE DVD and I can't find the "Principal Photography" featurette anywhere. Did they just not include it?

Since the thread is here anyway, are there any hidden goodies on it, like in FOTR?

The only one that I've found, Easter Egg, that is, is the MTV Award film thing. To get to it: Put in the first disc. Go to "Scene Selection." With your remote control/keyboard arrows, hit "Up" once and then "Down" once. That should highlight a ring. Hit "Enter." Then laugh your arse off.

They had two Easter Eggs in the extended DVD of FOTR, but I only know of this one in TTT. No one on the Internet says anything about another one. I hope PJ puts an Easter Egg in the extended DVD of ROTK. More imporantly though, I hope we don't have to wait quite as long for the extended DVD, since they're not doing post-production on another movie this time.

I think "Star Wars" had something to do with a Luke Kadiddlehopper, or something like that.

Twelve hours for Tolkien's LOR? It takes 20 hours to take in Wagner's Ring Cycle. But Wagner's plot is primitive and his characters idiotic (Siegfried is too stupid to fear anything, and you get near the end of the last opera before Siegfried ever meets a woman who is not his aunt.) I'd rather spend my time with Tolkien.
