I thought I'd share with you a little bit of wisdom I thought of at work today. I've been working at a local department store (first time in retail), so I thought I'd reflect on tidbits learned in the past year and what little is of this year:

1: Co-workers WILL SHARE with you, if you want them to or not.

2: The madder you get at us, the slower we check you out.

3: Inversely, the more you complain, the faster we'll whip out a coupon, even if we have to dig in the trash for one.

4: It only takes one person complaining to change the whole system, which (by the way) was working perfectly for you.

5: When taking inventory, the handheld scan machines are the [Evil Laugh] .

6: However, if you're given the choice between the scan machines and hand-counting, you'll take the [Evil Laugh]

7: Family emergencies are the perfect way to get out of work. Fake a call on your cell, tell your boss your parents/spouse/et cetera called and asked you to come home as soon as you can. Be vague, and use your time off to think up a good excuse.

(used that one today, but only because I'd been there since 6 in the morning three days straight and I've had about 10-15 hours of sleep all threee days *whine, whine, whine...*)

8: Husbands know NOTHING about their wives, not even what color they like. Boyfriends, however, are rather on the ball, just slightly misguided.

9: Leaving clothing in piles on the dressing room floors is a crime punishible by death in some stores. If you do this, don't a.) complain that there are no clean rooms and then b.) leave clothing yourself, or c.) complain that clothing is wrinkled/dusty.

(I actually had a woman do this. and she stared at me as she left, daring me. I was so mad...)

9: And now an equation; stealing someone else's sale = death (especially if you've been helping someone for an hour and a half)

So there you have it. What have you learned?

Well, see, as a customer I learned this long ago. I like it! It's a great technique. And after years of waitressing, I don't mind using it at all . . . [Wink]
