Decided that sometime in August I will be doing a road trip from Virginia to California. It is quite a move for me as I will not even be living there all that long before I go to New York again (hopefully). However, I am taking about 15 days to do this trip. I have been invited by one of my roommates to his place in Texas if he is out of the Navy by that time. Plan is to do some fishin'. Anybody have any ideas for stops along the way? I do plan on maybe the Grand Canyon after leaving TX, but have not thought of a whole lot else. I want to try and set-up my road map as I ride the ship over there.

my thoughts: It depends on how direct you want to travel and whether you want to see California or the places along the trip. Last time I drove across the country (starting from Atlanta) I went south to panama city, west to New Orleans, then houston, up to dallas, then westwards to Vegas and Lake Havasu, then through Barstow to LA. (I'm orignally from south Cal, so I've made the trip several times)

Grand Canyon is nice to see. Vegas is always worth the side trip. As to other sites worth seeing that would be roughly along the trip: JOshua tree national park, the original London Bridge in Lake Havasu, Tiajuana in Baja, Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.

It really depends on the route you decide to take and what you enjoy doing.

It always makes it fun if you stop at each and every tourist trap along the way. You should pick up magnets and stick 'em to the trunk of your car.

Yeah.

How much help am I?

Oh, yes, by all means travel through the south in summertime. Hello! I prefer I-80. It hits Chicago. That's about the only attraction, but there is some kind of gathering of sorts occuring there mid August.

No, but that is funny keedokes. Kinglear, I have no chioce but to go to CA. I have to report back to my ship in San Diego. Carlsbad Caverns sounds good, I have some old friends in Raton, NM. Grinch, I have a frind trom TX that invited me to go fishing for a day down at his place. If you think I'm gonna pass up some good fishin' you is crazy. Besides, I was stationed in SC for a year and have been to Florida for little bit during the summer. However, believe me, nothing can top the heat and humidity of a propulsion plant when the ship is near the Persian Gulf doing circles launching jets. Some of the areas down there are dangerous enough to breathe in it is so hot.
