I've just been told, for the 4th (out of 12 calls) time today, that I sound like a recording. Now, I assume this is just natural, since they have a scripted greeting, but I asked other employees, and this doesn't happen to them.

I've gotten, on good number of occassions, that I sound like Mr. MoviePhone. ::blinks:: So, to those that have heard my voice, whether in person or on phone, I don't sound like a recording, do I?

I think it's times like this I start talking like Darth Vader, or Yoda or something.

Hmmm.. yes, AOL you have chosen... free trial, you are seeking, yes?

You should go into the voice-recording business for companies.

I'm sure it's just the job. Perhaps you should use a strange accent or something?

EDIT: Because it wasn't encouraging.

Add a short, mirthful (but fake) laugh to the beginning of your greeting. They won't mistake you for a recording anymore. I used to get the same thing all the time. People tell me I should be in radio etc. Just trust me on this one.

I used to work in a call center doing support for Comcast. The most common reaction I would get from customers, after reading the scripted greeting, was "Thank God, finally someone who speaks English!"

Just keep your orange tights on and it'll warm you and your voice up a bit. [Wink]

Don't change your phone presence. I don't see any reason why you couldn't take advantage of the situation. Try giving them a menu of options, i.e. "Press one if I sound like a recording, press two if you wish to be transferred to a live operator," etc.

Or, conversely, you could actually transfer them to a recording, since that's what they seem to be looking for anyway....

I started to sound like a robot after a few months of telemarketing. Probably because I hated being there so much. Having spoken to you on the phone, however, I'm pretty sure you are a robot. You give it away when you say stuff like:

"I love the way you PUT TWO THINGS TOGETHER."

"You're so smart CELIA SIX ZERO."

I used to work for Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic). No one ever told me I sounded like a recording, but I sound 10 times more cute on the phone then I do when I speak with my real voice.

The 411 over here uses recordings that sound like real people--the first couple times, I just thought I got the same operator. It's sounds real, until it asks you to repeat what you said. Then you know it's electronic. I don't know why they bother.

Do Yoda. That would be so awesome. When I worked in fast food we used to change our voices into something weird when we did drive thru. Including that fake recording voice.

I recently had to deal with one of those Internet chat support techs, and couldn't tell if it was a human being or not. The guy was so scripted in his replies, and so generally clueless about actual technology and/or how to fix software problems, that I was convinced he was just a really well-programmed bot until I deliberately ticked him off and got a human reaction from him. Is it bad that I experimented with trying out a British accent a few times while working in call centers? It's easy to do your greeting in an accent, but when you actually have to start responding to the customer that way, it can be a challenge.
