First I called AT&T wireless to see about switching to a cheaper plan, and they not only found an EVEN BETTER plan, but they practically waved the required 1 year contract (added 3 months to my current contract). I'm saving about $40 a month there and I have nights & weekends minutes galore now (5000 free!)

Then, just now I got off the phone with my local land-line carrier. The company I already do business with. They said that I'm paying them too much for local & long distance phone service and switched me to plan that costs a little more than 1/2 what I'm paying now. And believe me, I quizzed them on it and checked against my latest bill.

But the best part is, it not only costs a lot less but I now get an extra phone feature that I didn't have before -- 3 way calling!!!

I'm pretty sure that could come in handy over the next year as dkw and I plan wedding things and have to talk to people. We wanted it desperately the other night to talk to Icarus & Cor, but neither one of us had it.

So now I have caller ID, call forwarding and 3 way calling!!!

For less money!!!

How cool is that?

When was the last time someone you are doing business with already called to save you money?

Weird.

I think phone companies do this alot. I called mine once and the guy offered me a really great deal, and I asked him why I had that other crappy deal at all. He said something like, you have to ask for it before they can make suggestions, or something like that. It was weird. But it's happened to me a couple of times. One suggestion is to call every six months and check if they have any better deals.

I dunno Bob. 3-Way calling sounds so.....dirty.

I even cancelled my call waiting because I hate the annoying clicking.

Hell, I think I am going back to rotary. I am the Phone Technology Neandethral!

Silly Bob. I never have phone companies give me good deals.

My local line has unlim local calling for an annoyingly large amount (including tax, it's $27/mo), and no one else has it cheaper. My long distance is great (GE Long distance) for 6 cents a minute any time, no minimum. I only use a couple hours a month at most (I've had some long distance bills for about $5). When a long distance carrier calls me, I often end up switching the telemarketer!

A couple years ago, my brother kept switching from Bell to Sprint for long-distance. Every time he switched to one, the other would call up with a better deal. Eventually, they stopped. So he ended up with Bell, paying next to nothing for long distance. And not long after, they called him to tell him that all those wonderful long-distance plans did not exist anymore.

Um, Suneun... $25/month flat rate.

Long distance is five cents/min out of state; seven cents/min. in state.

But I don't call long distance in TX.

Nobody does. [Razz]

Anyone with a cable modem who's getting screwed on local or long distance needs to check out Vonage.]http://"http://www.vonage.com"]Vonage. The $16/mo plan works really well for us, since we hardly ever make local calls. And we only pay like a buck a month in taxes and fees. [Smile]

Edit: Oh man, forget the link. My brain is fried on CSS and HTML, I can't hold one more link syntax in my head.

Edit 3: Oh man, and it just gets worse every time I edit!

I think phone companies have gotten more responsive because people can take their phone numbers with them now, both to land lines and wireless plans. This removes one of the biggest costs to change phone companies, and they know it.

Power to the people!
