Movies were nominated by members of the Hatrack River community ( http://www.hatrack.com/ubb/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=022728 ) during the week of March 22, 2004.

50 movies were chosen

Sorting

The sorting methodology was:

1.) The year the movie was released.
2.) Alphabetical Listing.
3.) Groups of five were broken out in the previous sorting order.

This is important to note on the polls, as entries are pitted roughly against contemporary rivals. A notable split is Forbidden Planet 1956 and Invasion of the Bodysnatchers 1956. The alpha split determined that they were not on the same list.

The Rules

There are 50 entries to the series of polls.

There will be three rounds, and each round will last one week. The First Round will be a series of ten polls, producing 10 winners, and taking place from March 27, 2004 to April 2nd, 2004. The Second Round will be a semifinal series of two polls, producing two winners, and will take place April 3rd, 2004 to April 9th, 2004. The Final Round will square off the two finalists in the Ultimate Grudge Match of Science Fiction Moviedom, taking place from April 10th to April 16th.

Me either

As an update there's been quite a bit of voting since yesterday and in Heat 9 Back to the Future is in joint lead with 12 Monkeys.

Also in Heat 8 Stargate and Terminator 2 are in joint lead.

The good news is Soylent Green has knocked Planet of the Apes of the top spot.

Subliminal message to all who have not yet voted: "Heat 4 - Vote Logan's Run, Vote Logan's Run". I know CE of the TK is better but LR had a big impact on me pre adolescence. I didn't see CE to much later and its incredibly long winded.

Probably blew their budget, but the plots were okay.

I barely remember it because I was just a little nipper. I have very vivid memories of the circus where they got rid of the 'old' people. I sometimes think about how I would be dead if I were living in that world. Heh.

Don't be badmouthing Back to the Future. It is a contender for best film of the 80's. It is easily one of the best films in these polls.

That is, if you define a "good film" as one that is so much fun that you want to watch it over and over again. There are several movies on those lists that I saw once but would never be able to sit through a second time.

And the poll hasn't closed. I will reserve my vote for a tie breaker, but this contest will be officially over this afternoon when I log back on.

This is the true race. 12 Monkeys and The Matrix have been dueling since the thread was posted.

Go vote. This has been a great turnout for the other polls, at least six more people may vote.

However, there are over eighty members....

You know, the whole "over eighty members" thing seems less impressive when you realize that 18 of them have no posts at all, and 34 have five or fewer.

Was it Yoda? Darth telling Luke that he was his father? C3PO getting blown up?

It was a classic....

Star Wars is gonna win not necessarily because it's better than the other two, but because it's purer sci-fi with none of that mind-trip stuff. Or rather, the mind-trip stuff is a sub-genre of sci-fi and thereby less complete than the traditional "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" set-up.

The Final Round

Mid-week Update:

Star Wars: Episode V (TESB)-1980 50% [ 8 ]
12 Monkeys-1995 12% [ 2 ]
The Matrix-1999 37% [ 6 ]

Total Votes : 16

The Dark Side rocks on, though I dispute the idea that it is closer to pure SF than the others. It's got buckets of psuedo-science and magic!

I'm afraid that Hard SF went out the window in these polls long ago....

Whether or not it's "good" Science Fiction, The Empire Strikes Back obviously holds a place in our popular imagination. The influences it has made on popular culture is obvious, but how deep does that go?

Joseph Campbell loved what Lucas had done with Star Wars. I think it's pretty special too.

Thanks for voting.
