Working Assets has been around for a long time (almost 20 years), but I only really noticed them today. They sent me a huge envelope made with recycled paper with information on how to switch to their long distance plan.

Why should I? Because they donate a portion of the money to a list of non-profit organizations. It's a few pennies here and there, but in 2003 those pennies equalled $3 million to "progressive nonprofits."

They offer a long distance plan, a credit card, and a wireless phone service. The prices are fairly competitive to the other companies out there.

Anyone heard of this? Anyone use it? Anyone thinking about using it?

*Liberal activism is my choice of phrasing because Working Assets definitely seems to be of the liberal sort, in their choices and how they present themselves. Here is a listing of the groups in 2004 they are supporting. It includes the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club, Amnesty International, and the ACLU.

According to their website, if you join now you get a free pint of B&J ice cream every month for a year.

Oh yeah, they also link to the Onion and think Bush is an idiot.

Oh yeah, what I thought was most fascinating is that Working Assets allows two free calls a day (for 5 mins a piece) to specific officials to voice your opinion on a subject! I'm having trouble finding the specific info on the website, but it mentions it on the letter they sent me.

I used to love Rainforest Crunch, but they stopped making it.

I'm terribly fond of toffee, coffee, caramel, and pralines in ice cream, so my choice usually revolves around those ingredients. Notice chocolate isn't on the list.

I know of WA, they've been spamming me credit card and LD mailings since I contributed to a certain politician back in 2000... I should have taken them up on their 5.9% (non-introductory) CC offer... Of course, the CC stuff is really just rebranded MBNA.

Suneun, I used Working Assets as my phone company for a year. In a few months, when I'm out of my weird rental agreement and have a phone that is listed in my own name again, I'll likely go back to them.

5.9% is a pretty decent rate if it is a fixed rate and not a variable plus prime rate. [Smile]

Well, they do support planned parenthood and we all know that is the front of a neo-Nazis organization. [Wink]

and I don't know how to define "liberal nonprofit" but here's a not-church that gives food to the hungry.

I like the idea, but they are twice as expensive as our Quest plan. So, I go cheap, buy my one Ben and Jerry's and give where I can.
