What I'm about to say is that I'm talking about overprotection, fear, accusations, repressions, and beliefs. I believe that my sister and history are right, most Americans won't learn until the disaster from solar system strikes Earth

I read The Crucible, and I learned will people even believe and express their own views? Maybe when the asteroid hits Earth. But not now or in hundred years or so. I don't want to sound mean or anything, but I think my possibilites will come true.

PS: I was born in US and Chinese. So make fun of my English if you want to b/c your English are at least a little bit specific or you want more normality than ever.

I'm not going to make fun of your English, but I'm also not going to answer your question because I really don't know what you're asking.

Most Americans won't learn what until a disaster hits?

Hi want2write! Glad to meet you.

I didn't intend to make fun of your language. I was just trying to find out more about you and your background by analyzing your particular writing style.

Edit: Spelling.

Yes, most people do this. However if expressing those views would bring trouble onto them they usually decide to keep their mouth shut.

Um, what lesson are we supposed to learn from the destruction of our planet from something completely unrelated to earth?

Well, supposedly we'll have some advance notice and have time for one last...

...before we're toast.

Do you mean that Chinese people don't think Americans are nice? I want my rocket science back!

Maybe Americans' purpose for existence is to put Chinese people into space, so the Chinese can stop all the asteroids from dropping onto the mean Americans. Yeah, that's a nice story. I like that one.

Every people in the world has had their ups and downs, their rights and wrongs, their mistakes and their successes. I don't think this world, this America, this particular time in history, is any different from any other.

So far I have only seen Black Mask. There was a fight scene in which a head rolls across the floor. That was cool.

I though you were native American. Of course, the evidence has conveniently disappeared. So maybe Alexa, Tom and I are all just crazy.

I know how you feel about my reactions against this country, but maybe I don't live happily in there, esp. with my family around and message boards w/o virtuality.

What I'm about to say is that most Americans don't learn about their mistakes until the world either ends or gets hit.

But Americans are a piddling minority in this world. Why destroy the whole world just to teach a few hundred million people a lesson?

want2write,

what do you mean by "mean"? I don't think I've ever encountered that sentiment before. "obnoxious," yes. "gluttonous," sure. "naive and ignorant," according to the less-critical. but "mean"?

He means that they're average. I think they're not so much "mean" as "median".

I think everyone has many things to learn, it's just some people have specific things to learn that others do not. I'm not so quick to judge cultures nearly as much as I used to, hopefully that's a good thing. I think that's because now that my job is to study other cultures I can begin to understand another perspective, and I have to weigh that with what I have always been accustomed to. I can start to see the motivations behind why other people do things the way they do. Americans might be mean in some areas, but they're good in others. I think the big problem is that most citizens in nations don't understand the other perspectives, including Americans.

...plus we need the Chinese to help take care of the asteroids. [Wink]

W2w,

As far as "learning our mistakes when the world ends"...do you mean (1) just before the world ends, (2) the very moment when it ends, or (3) just after it ends?

I don't think anybody's going to be learning any lessons just after it ends.

I think the only lessons we'll be learning at the very moment when it ends are how to run around on fire, screaming "AAAAAAUGH!"

So, do you mean "just before the world ends"? And, if so, then how much before the world ends?

[Note: this post has been reviewed to ensure that it does not make fun of w2w's language skills. I do want to make sure, though, that I understand the question.]

Assuming this is true, is this a characteristic that sets America apart from other countries?

Are we talking about learning not to be mean and some violent act of God or nature will finally make us nice?

Are you mean w2w?

Speed,

By "median" do you think he means we are the divide on a highway? Don't cross the median or you will get into a head on collision. Iraq crossed the median and crashed. Causing crashes is mean. Being normal is the mean, and the mean reaction to the median response is a divide in the high-way that causes crashes..shiasta! How mean is that?

Or maybe the median people are Chinese and since China's name translates to middle country, Americans are really Chinese, and since the Chinese will stop the meteor, we are really nice. After all, we are mean.

Pooka: When w2w said that she was "native American," I think she meant native-born American.

I still think want2write is probably a teenage girl. A boy wouldn't assign credibility to his sister's opinion the way w2w has.

You've got to give her credit for having the guts to keep coming back here after the abuse she's taken.

I think want2write's struggle may be common to teenagers of all ethnic backgrounds.

I've been friends with the Hispanic-American kid across the street since he was six. His circle of friends has changed dramatically since he entered his teenage years. When he was young he mingled with all flavors of kids, but now he's gravitating toward other Hispanic-Americans.

It's interesting to me that if these kids go on to college, they start to mix with all flavors again.

I think it's an identity thing, trying to discover who you are and where you fit in. In the process there is enmity for anyone who falls outside one's current self-description.

Sometime u write when forum is American how Americans dont learn. When u are American and host is what is acompliched? America the melting pot (not smoking pot) make you American?

When I read Ulysses and my history teacher says Chinese are American like Irish. When will we learn chastity, curtesy, binevolince, kindness, nice legs, integrety? When Buggers attack our Mars base? Don't mean to be unkind, but my sister agrees.

Really? That's not how it works here most of the time. There are special "program houses" for every type of minority, and ethnic groups tend to clump together in a big way.

I am mean.

I'm the meanest hombre you've ever seen.

I eat babies.

I stand outside swanky restaurants with armfuls of rotten tomatoes and throw them at the beautiful people of the world.

I corrupt children. The ones I haven't eaten yet.

I am mean.

So watch out.

Mean is rude or uncivility for one with no respect, like in Death of Salesmen. When you read it, you know what I mean. Median is like on the highway when someone in front has road rage. If you saw American with the gun in the glove box when watching Fox News. He was lisening to J-z too, if that helps the clarity.

Yeah, you're probably right, but I had Arabs and Chinese nationals as lab partners and in study groups.

They did tend to hang out with their own when it came to playtime. Also, when it came time for tests they'd all be in the back of the room talking and sharing the same calculator with the answer punched up on the display. I know, that's naughty of me, but that's how it seemed sometimes.

So at what age do the ethnic barriers come down, and everybody else is no longer "mean"? Never? When you join Hatrack?

Well, many people have definitely been rude to him about how he writes. I think language is definitely one of the biggest cultural barriers there are. My guess is that a lot of Latinos, Asians, and other Ethnic groups stick together because they can chat in a language they feel comfortable with instead of wondering whether they sound right or trendy enough in English. [Dont Know] That's my theory, anyway. I've noticed that a lot of the cultural "cliques" tend to be speaking a different language at their tables and in their circles. You want to feel comfortable with your friends, and I personally could not feel comfortable around people I was constantly suspicious of judging me for how I spoke.

Hrm.

Well, I guess I gave my hypothesis on w2w in my thread, and it really didn't have anything to do with language barriers. We've had other people who weren't perfectly fluent in English on Hatrack. I don't remember there being an attack on them.

You're a nice person, Brinestone. Not everyone deserves it, though.

See, I don't think it is the language. I think it is the logic-leaps, undefined feelings, attacks, and non-sequitors. I don't think anyone is attacking him because of a poor command of the English language.
