May 1 will from now on be a special day for 10 European countries. Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta joined European Union May 1, 2004. That is awesome!
Don’t get me wrong, I am not absolutely crazy about EU – far it be from that. But I believe it’s better to join than not to. So we joined. The prices will rise and there be many problems but it’s worth it! We belong to Europe, we re-claimed the place we once were forced to abandon. After WWII what was Czechoslovakia back then accepted so called Marshall plan, and then was forced to pull out. Soviet Union had influenced our country, in 1948 communist came to power and held onto it till November 1989. Long time, 2-3 generations were/are messed up by communist regime. Now, 15 years after fall of communism and building democracy we are back, back in Europe, no more iron curtain, no more communist dictatorship! Am blessed, I have seen all these changes. I grew up in communism, when I was 13 it collapsed (I understood lot of what was happening back in 1989). I lived through years of building democracy, split of my beloved home land – Czechoslovakia, I saw occupying Soviet troops leave Czechoslovakia (invaded our country in 1968 and stayed way too long), lived through years of “modern dictatorship” in Slovakia, saw the change in 1998 when the new cabinet was elected, saw my country prosper and grow, saw my country join NATO and EU, country that used to be member of Warsaw pact and was under direct influence of Soviet Union. Am blessed. In midst of this all, I found the Lord, became believer which is the biggest blessing ever! I can’t wait to talk about all this to my children one day. They will be born free, born in the world I tend to protect. They be free to become whoever they want to be, they be born both, Europeans and Americans, they have 2 passports – EU and USA. What a blessing is that! I think that my wife and I are giving our children a great gift, they be borne citizens of EU and USA, they be able to speak several languages, be free to travel, study… Most of all, they will be born into loving family, a Christian family! I pray we be able to raise them in faith and obedience to the Lord! I am glad they will never have to experience what I had to go through. True, it made me who I am, but I want my children to be free (in sense of country where they live…)

I still think that the west third of Russia is in Europe, so maybe in the future you guys can get them in too. And in NATO. That would rule. Long live world peace!
