On Friday morning I have to give a State of the Union Address to my 1st period class. Here is the assignment word for word: "Your final for this class will to be to deliver a 5-7 minute State of the Union speech. This speech must be in the style or format of a real State of the Union speech. You will need to research a minimum of 10 topics that are currently major concerns of this nation. What are the facts of the situation. what is your stance on the issue, and what is it that you are proposing? You are trying to get us to see things your way and stand behind you when you take action. Of course you will need to work on your speaking skills- voice, use of notes, poise, and use of time. Your speech should be a cohesive, engaging talk about our nation's issues and proposals for solving them."

My classmates and I have all agreed that this assignment is rather vague. Even my mom is having a hard time figuring out exactly how to do it. Basically, our teacher is expecting us to include about the same amount of information that the president includes in his speech, but we have to fit it into 7 minutes. *cough* Mind you this is a teacher that gives project after project to us designed so that we teach ourselves and she simply grades us. I strongly dislike her class, because I've learned almost nothing.
I am in desperate need of help. I was hoping that the incredible people in Hatrack good give me some pointers.

If you'd like to help you should know...
I would rather swim in vomit than speak in public
I'm a senior in High school(12th grade)
The class is U.S. Government
I'm stressed [Frown]

You should definitely call a lot of people "evil" during the speech. And if your classmates don't give you a standing ovation after every sentence, imply that they're unpatriotic commie terrorists.

7 minutes does seem a little short for both explaining and presenting comprehensive solutions to 10 problems with our country, though.

Ha, actually, if it were a real State of the Union, you would get someone ELSE to write your speech, transcribe it in to the Teleprompter, do your hair and makeup, and just stand there glassy-eyed behind a podium and read whatever scrolls by. [Big Grin]

But half the class must remain seated and diapproving. Also, at least two must remain with their arms crossed and a scowl on their face (like reps Kennedy or Sanders) [Big Grin]

Actually, I heard that Clinton was the first president to have really long state of the union speeches. I may be wrong, but previous to Clinton, SotU were rarely longer than 20 minutes.

So what do you need? A list of good things to talk about quickly?

Yeah I suppose. The teacher probably wants specific things like No Child Left Behind. Though the time limit might restrict details to a minimal. I dunno...I'm all befuddled.
